Is anyone up to speed on the new plans they just came out with? I now people have been using the motorized dish with success and getting in motion service up to around 8kts. They now have a maritime plan and a high performance flat mount dish. Difference in the hardware is $600 vs $2500. The Roam service plan is $150/month and the Maritime plan is $250/month. The following is from the Starlink website... Starting May 2023, If you exceed the allotted data on your Mobile Priority plan and have not opted in to additional Mobile Priority data, you will be unable to access the internet while on the ocean except to access your Starlink account. You will continue to have unlimited Mobile service on inland coverage (e.g., lakes, rivers). Opt-in to automatically purchase additional Mobile Priority Data by the GB to maintain connectivity on the ocean at our fastest network speeds. So you get 50GB for $250/month, After than you get cut off from use on the ocean but "on land" you still have unlimited data, just at non-priority speeds. So the million dollar quaestion that no one seems know is....Where does "land" end and "ocean begin? I mean, I'll never be more than a few miles off shore and that would be rare. Mostly Chesapeake bay, ICW and great lakes. Maybe the ICW down the Keys. So the Maritime and Mobility packages are both the same cost. Maritime is global and works anywhere. Mobility is regional and technically works on land. Both offer in-motion service and both use the flat mount dish. $2500 for the dish and $250/month for 50GB. The Roam plan uses the smaller motorized dish, not supposed to work in-motion but seems to up to 8kts. Website claims in-motion use. Looks like you get unlimited non-priority data unless you opt in and buy priority data by the GB. So if I go with the Roam plan and motorized dish, cost is less but will it work on the boat in the Chesapeake, ICW, great lakes and a mile or 2 offshore. Not terribly concerned with in-motion use although it would be nice. If I go with Mobility or Maritime cost for equipment and service is higher but you get faster data up to 50GB. If you go over 50BG on land you still get unlimited non-priority data. If you go over on the ocean you have to purchase more data by the GB. So where does land end and ocean begin as far as service? Is the standard non-priority data suitable for streaming TV and Zoom calling?
We ve been using starlink for almost a year. First the standard RV dish which pivots on a mast and then since February the $2500 High Performance in motion dish. I made the switch because the standard dish stopped working underway even at 10 kts we have the Regional Moble plan at $150 a month, “best effort” unlimited. This works great at the dock or underway, close to the hat starlink defines as land area. Non priority aka best effort is fine for streaming movies. We ve had up to 15 people on board, all with phones, tablets and at least one appletv streaming. when we go to the exumas, I just activate Opt In Priority Data before crossing the stream or when running between island groups which starlink considers “ocean”. When we get to an anchorage, I turn it back off. Cost is $2 a GB while activated and it s as easy as clicking a button on or off in the app. the 50 GB $250 plan doesn’t make much sense as the 50 gb will be used first whether you are offshore or close to land. So if you don’t go offshore during a billing cycle you still paying $100 more. Or if you go a couple of weeks into a billing cycle you will have used up the first 50 gb and have to pay $2 a gb while offshore. you can see what is considered land and what is considered ocean on the Starlink website. Anything black is considered ocean. Anything blue inclusions areas marked “coming soon” is land. starlink has been a game changer for us. The cost is actually less than we used to pay for a US and a Bahamas sims we have connectivity 24/7
Cool. The website makes it sound like if you get the HP dish you have to have the mobility or maritime plan. Your setup sounds like what we need. Sounds like you can combine any dish with any plan.
If I zoom in n the map it looks like "land" service would get you a mile or 2 offshore. Also noticed that a lot area's are shaded as "waitlist". I'm guessing that applies to residential and not mobile plans. If I order the flat dish ($2500) I have 2 options for service plans. Mobility or Maritime. Both give you priority data up to 50GB. There is no option for mobile non-priority data plan when ordering the flat dish. I wonder if I go ahead and order the mobility plan with flat dish I can just drop the data plan back to mobile non-priority right off the bat. Rumor is that they are moving toward shutting down all in-motion use unless you are on the priority data plans (mobility or maritime). Very confusing as they even contradict themselves on the website.
Starlink can be frustrating because of the non stop plan changes… indeed, now, it seems that the lowest cost plan for new HP mobile orders is the $250 50GB plan.
So it seems that both maritime and mobility offer the same priority data cap and same pricing while maritime works well offshore and mobility does not. Maritime shuts you down when you exceed the cap if offshore but will switch to non-priority if "on land". Mobility also switches to non-priority when the cap is exceeded. So if they both switch to non-priority after 50GB and they both cost the same, why two plans? Why wouldn't the maritime plan work just as well as the mobility plan on land? Seems like they both offer the same dish, same pricing and same data plan, but mobility only works "on land".
Plans change all the times, they can’t make up their minds. Some users have reported buying the $2500 dish at resellers like Best Buy or RV places and then being able to activate the $150 mobile regional plan, which you can’t do on the website… go figure. They can built the most amazing network but can’t figure out the marketing and customer service
