South Bay versus basket strainers?

Been using them for years, great especially for air con and water makers. Air con runs pretty much 24/7 down here so internal strainers require regular cleaning. Solved problem with south bay strainers.

I also have them on the mains on my 53 and they work very well although the main strainers usually stay clean because they don’t run as much as air cons.

they re fine for generators as long as they have relief hole in back to prevent pressure from building up underway which could flood the gen. And you need to make sure your diver keep growth out of the relief hole. Personally I prefer not to have them on gens.

maintenance is limited to monthly scrubbing by the diver, just like any other thru hull.

I can't offer much of a detailed analysis but I have the SB strainers on my mains and gen. Basket strainer for AC. Never had any issues. I clean the SB strainers at haul out every season. The basket gets cleaned about as often. Of course we don't have anywhere near the growth that folks in South FL have to deal with.

They are especially good for air con intake which run pretty much 24/7 down here in sofl. How often you have to clean the strainers depends on location, in some case it s once a week which means shutting down the entire system, pulling the basket, cleaning it on the dock, reinstalling and restarting. 20’ spent sweating.

on the other hand the South Bay strainers don’t require any cleaning except a quick scrub by the diver who comes once a month any way

also unlike typical slotted plastic bags can’t get stuck. Before using regular slots, at least once a year I had to get under the boat to clear a plastic bag. With the SB the bag may block flow causing the pump to shut down but it won’t get jammed.

I don't think you're missing anything. But the cleaning of the SB strainers may be less frequent for some. With basket strainers one may have to regularly pull the baskets and pick out jelly fish, sea weed, eel grass, etc. You don't have to do that with the SB strainers.

We used the type with removable perorated screens for years. Would always keep an extra set of screens and painted with anti-fouling to change out as needed when the diver is there.
