Airsep Maintenance / Replacement

    My boat is making some brown/black smoke underway. Engines are MTU Series 60, 14L at 825hp. My assumption is the engine is not getting enough air. RPMs and speed seem fine. I am scheduling to have the after coolers cleaned, last done 3-years and 600 hours ago.

    I think the Airsep filters are the original ones. They are black and don't clean up. There may have been an exhaust leak prior to my buying the boat. There is soot in various places and when I clean a sooty area it does get dirty again.

    Planning to replace the Airseps. Is it worth getting the new high performance version (cylinder) shape vs. the existing cone shape. Supposed to be quieter and higher airflow.

    The coalescer is built into the mount, supposed to have a 7-year life. Likely 15-years old. These are $850 each. How often do you change out this type of mount/coalescer modules?

    The 60s had exhaust leak issues before and at the turbo. Not all expanding gasses going to the turbo,, slow turbo,, low air and soot/dark exhaust.
    Get those leaks fixed quickly.
    Unhealthy for people.
    Also clogs air filters, hurts engines ingesting soot.

    Walker now makes a serviceable Air-Sep. The coalescer is replaceable and are even available at West Marine with the air filters.

    A dirty air filter will offer lots of issues. They are cleanable a few times with the K&N cleaning kits.

    IMO, the shape of the filter does not mater. The size does, more media the better.

    For the cylindrical airseps there is an aftermarket filter sleeve that you can buy as well. I did a quick search, and couldn't find the product, but my engineer used to have them for our 16v4000s on EVVIVA. It's basically a white fabric sleeve that fits over the airsep- it's changed every hundred hours or so, saving maintenance on the Walker filters.
