Hi everyone I am new to the forum and recently the owner of a 1990 75ft LOA George Sutton / Mark Treworgy motorsailer project. It is currently moored at anchor in the Indian river in Melbourne Florida since my perchance, docking is very hard to come by in my area for such a large vessel so my plan is to moor it long term. Hurricane season is coming soon and I fear for it dragging. As other smaller vessels have in the past month already. My current equipment from what I have been told ( I have not personally viewed them yet) are a 105lb and a 80lb danforth, with 100ft of 1 inch chain out. My plan is to buy a 1,000 LB steel Pyramid Anchor for permanent mooring and I'm looking for opinions on my plan before I spend the money my question is does this sound like a good plan or way overkill? I know getting it in the water and moving it will be challenging at best, but I don't plan on moving the anchor after I find a good spot near me for mooring. And if anyone can recommend chain size and length for this setup? Does anyone have an opinion on Pyramid vs mushroom style? My vessel weights 112,000 LB with a steel hull 6'2 draft and 62ft LOD. The Indian river is shallow not much more then 8ft at best in most locations, with a sand and seagrass bottom as far as I know. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you to everyone in advance. Johnathan P
Your best bet is to have a Helical mooring installed if that is allowed? https://www.boatus.com/hurricanes/moorings1.asp
Have not talked to Mark on the subject, I'll look into the rules on helical mooring looks like a good idea.
From what information I can obtain online it looks like permits are required for helix screws in Florida from the army corp of engineers, I also can't seem to find anything that is good for more then a 20ton vessel in that sort of product, not sure maybe multiple screws could be used, but the idea of getting a permit sounds like a whole other challenge.
