Yep, The second built. Huckins has many power options available for this design. The first built has a tower and raising fish in South Florida every time out.
There's an outboard version too. Saw Cindy at the Palm Beach Show. Spoke highly of Capt. Ralph... https://www.yachtforums.com/threads/news-throwback-huckins-sportsman-38.34538/#post-313975
Very nice boat. Looks like a boat! I like the varnished sides. Interesting color for the water line. Wood boats raise fish. It's common knowledge. The kid (me) just painted my CC Dory that same hull color.
" ...Interesting color for the water line..." Linssen used this same color only against their dark blue hull, it was stunning. Good pics, Seamster.
The yellow boot stripe is actually far from being a novelty. I'd rather call it a classic, which works very well also with wooden hulls. The first example that pops to mind is the early 50s Bermudian Yawl below. Rather well known as her owner was Gianni Agnelli, no less.
Huckins has not made a wood boat in many years. This 38 is all composite. I would take a peek from time to time during the hulls layup. Special sound dampening material was also included in the layup to reduce hull / water noise. Near wispier quiet operation. Pretty hi-tech thru out.
Isn’t “Composite” wood or some sort of wood, balsa or whatever then covered in marine goo? ( Epoxy)? They are not solid glass. I’m aware of that. Never were, I believe. CR , hit me with it. How’s this one built?
The ole sealed wood Hucks have been long gone. Many of the later big-uns were built with Airex coring*, This 38 uses Core-Cell® M100**. Junior pointed out a new material in the lay up that reduced the hull noise while operating. I do not recall the brand or spec other than at the time, it was new and secrete. If you tell anybody about this, I have to whop you or extract lots of rum from your wallet. Any way, the reviews do reflect a quiet ride. The rest of the super structure is also cored with this newer Core-Cell®,, I think. The varnished side panels (only real wood) are ad on and can be modified per the next owners desires. I am not a sales person. Just trying to answer a question. *https://www.3accorematerials.com/en/markets-and-products/airex-foam **https://marineware.com/core/m-core/corecell-m100
... I guess I might sound inquisitive, but don't get me wrong, it's a genuine curiosity: Why are you calling "composite" what as I understand is just a plain vanilla GRP cored construction, used by most if not all boatbuilders since ages?
Well, I am not a sales person , nor a technical rep of the build. I'm just trying to answer a question; Not wood cored. Supposed latest and greatest coring used. If you have questions past my abilities, ask a person on the payroll. Please contact Cindy, Buddy or Sara @ Huckins. http://huckinsyacht.com/
Excellent lesson, CR! Most of what you talked about .., I have know clue… lol. But I am on here to learn. And make friends. Lol. Really sound neat. Gotta keep the varnished sides! I sure like the boat.

In both my boats. No core what so ever. More a “ modern technique “ My modern being 1980 in up . I’ll catch up one day!
The side panels are actually faux wood, the covering board and toe rail are real wood. There is also a secondary electric engine for silent cocktail cruising.
The Huckins Sportsman 38 is a custom composite boat. The center part of the “composite sandwich” consists of premium grade Core-Cell M100 impact resistant structural foam, E-glass base fabrics, Kevlar/E-glass blends from bottom, and Carbon fiber laminates in stringers, sound deadening material; all vacuum infused together with vinylester resin. Fairenuff, but that doesn't contradict what I said. GRP cored (aka "sandwich") construction has been around for decades, sometimes mixed with solid glass. Also my own boat has a solid glass bottom for instance, but above the w/line it's all cored. A technique that the builder adopted in the early 80s...
