Fleming 55 I am also a newer owner of a Fleming 55. Mine is hull 034 which is one of the first 55's (1993). It has been well taken care of and is a fine boat. There is an owners forum that your broker can lash you up with although it is not as active as this. If you have any specific questions let me know, although I only have 20 or 30 hours at the helm. I also have several days on board during the survey and a published findings report. Most of the things that were found were incidental but there was things that have been redesigned since for the betterment of the boat.
Leek good to hear your thoughts and hope you enjoy your new boat. What is your normal crusing speed and have you carried out any checks on your fuel consumption yet.my boat will be delivered to me in April.Fleming
Fuel Consumption I think the hull likes to go about 8.5 knots, the Flo Scan says I am burning 4.5 gallons per hour or so at that speed. I have the twin 425 Cats. Top speed is just over 15 knots. If you move it to 10 knots the fuel burn says about 10 gallons per hour. 12 knots about 16 gallons per hour, wide open almost 60 gallons per hour. It almost seems like the engines are not working hard enough at the most efficient speeds but you have plenty of reserve speed if you need to get out of bad weather. I think the newer engines don't necessarily get bothered by slower speed operation but I run mine up once or twice a day to keep the operating temps up. Operating at this speed is a little different deal for me as for the last 10 years i have been running a 38' convertible with a planing hull that liked to run at 22 knots or so. I will be paying more attention to tides I would think... The boat is very civilized, quiet, not a lot of movement (at least in 2- 3' waves). We are going to operate mostly in Lake Washington and South Puget Sound this summer, probably go into British Columbia in the fall after the crowds leave. Eventually we would like to end up in southeast Alaska at least once or twice.
Leek,i am just backfrom tiawan,to see the completion of my fleming55.It wa a great experience to see first hand how these boats are built and how they go about mantaining the quality. They tell me the boat now has a top realistic speed of 18 kts and it looks like fuel consumption could be around the same as you seem to be getting on your boat slightly better i think .But i have not got my head around all that yet i take delivery of the boat in GB middle march . i am in the building industry and the factory was just like a building site which might put some people off but i was very impressed . There has been a lot of advances since hull 34 but basically the boat is the same.Fleming
Fleming speed and commonalities I have no doubt with the engines that they are putting in now you could get this boat to plane or run at 18kt. I have spent 50 years on planing boats from 17-40'. This boat feels like it wants to go along at 8-9 kts regardless of the horsepower that you have. Good to have get home quick capability but it does not feel to me that the boat is built for 15t speeds... I am also in the building industry. I have just retired from General Buildng Contractor side of things after 32 years in the field and office. We built for MS and many local and national developer. Scope ranged from swinging a new door to very large projects (campus expansion) for a well knowed local company. Hope your build and delivery goes well. They appear to be remarkable boats. Where will you use it primarily?
Leek.i hope to cruise european waters ,ireland ,GB,France spain and up around Norway and Sweden.at least that is the plan God willing,Like you i have been used to cruising at much faster speeds 20 to 30kts .i am a little concerned that i can handle the slower speeds .Hopefully it will be ok ,i do have to say i need to slow down and enjoy and stop racing about. My wife is not a sailor but likes the social scene and the boat when it is stationery and not bouncing about .Any advice anybody can give would be helpfull.Fleming.
[/ QUOTE]
