I am looking to upgrade the anchor on my 89 Viking. I would be looking for a rocna or similar. But I don’t know if any of them fit in the factory roller without modification. Anyone know? also what size chain does the factory windless take?
I have a 1988 Viking Motor Yacht and the previous owner put a 25 kg/55# Rocna on it and it works. I do not think it required any mods. We have spent several days this summer and last and have not dragged even in a few windy days with 30-40 mph gusts on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. We have 5/16 g4 chain s d in the original factory spec and option list from summer 1988 that is the size chain listed. I have an original copy of the list. we have an Ideal windless. Hope that helps.
What type bottom do you usually anchor up in ? Around here it is thick, stinky mud. Holds pretty good.
Thank you both. I learned something new today. I would one day like to upgrade my 42' Ocean to your same set up. but I may go with the next size down, 44lb.
We have sand, gravel, clay and mud. Holds well in all. I don’t think you will have any issue in that bottom. I have not anchored in rocky area but previous owner may have in a little different area of Lake Huron.
I’m still debating chain vs chain and rope. Currently have 200ft chain. (I’m guessing it’s the same as above as it works with windlass, just kept forgetting to measure). Was thinking of doing 150 of chain and 400 of rode for deeper anchoring, planning 5/8 line
Don’t know if the chain gypsy will work with rope but I assume you have the capstan above the gypsy on a vertical Ideal windlass. I have model ACW on my boat. Some people like Chain and rope for the stretch of the rope and less weight in the chain locker.
I’m figuring most of my anchoring is shallow water so the chain will be used. But in the odd chance I’m in deeper water the rope will weigh less and give some stretch
What I should clarify here is the bottom around here holds pretty good. I don't have a Rocna and it is why I asked about where it holds. I have been thinking of one to replace my Danforth, which, for around here, works real well. In fact you could almost use a cinderblock.
I wonder if the Vulcan would sit better on the Viking. Might call rocna tomorrow and see what they say
FWIW, I've had best luck on the Chesapeake, especially in some of the slimier/oozier areas, with SuperMAX and Fortress anchors. On an earlier/smaller boat, an actual Danforth worked pretty well. The only other style I've tried here has been Deltas of various sizes (appropriate to specific boats). Usually worked OK in decent mud, not so great (usually failed) in slime. Fortress published some Chesapeake mud tests several years ago, articles appeared in several magazines, and I think that included Rocnas. -Chris
Hmmm, very good point never though of the weight factor. I have 15' of chain then 5/8'' rope. Works well for me.
