I believe Oceanco and Mr. Bezos have a little problem with his new 415 ft long and 450 Mio $ sailing yacht.

The historical harbour bridge „De Hef“ in Rotterdam has to be demolished, for the new saling yacht of Amazon-founder Jeff Bezos to pass through with erected masts. The present clearence height of 130 ft is not sufficient. Also Oceanco and Mr. Bezos are willing to pay for that demolition, protests are rising among the population of Rotterdam against this demolition.





I will be standing by and enjoy the outcome. They must have known the problem from the beginning but just remained quiet. A typical maneuver from this company. Keep quiet and confronting the opponent with accomplished facts.

But as far as historical monuments in the Netherlands are concerned, Dutch people should not be underestimated.

"Damage joy is the most beautiful joy" . Forgot the name of the poet.

As far as I know, they used a different building process, shedule and different building places this time, for pure in-house and may be even profit reasons. They must have known the bridge problem before. That is the reason, the people of Rotterdam are so angry with the request to just demolish the historical bridge for this passage. A typical approach of this Middle East ownership of Oceanco. They probably told Mr. Bezos, the bridge would be no problem!

Just guess, some rich guy would be doing the great loop with his luxury yacht and would show up in Chicago and would be requesting to have this 19 ft low clearance height bridge to be demolished just for his boat to pass through. Would be interesting what the Chicago people would say.

My estimate would be, the officials of Rotterdam stand firm, Oceanco will have to pull the masts again, go through the intact bridge, transport the masts to a point with no more obstacle and set the masts again. What must be, must be!

Lets wait and see. Do not underestimate the political power of public protests in Europe. And the opposition is rising at the moment in the Netherland. And if the town major gave its promise, it is even worse. You are right, have them pay for the renovation of the old railway bridge would be a great trick. But pulling the masts again is most likely cheaper.

In the following, I am only expressing my personal opinion, as I do not want to talk to their lawyers and have YF loose an advertiser.

I personally do not like Oceanco. I would never buy a ship from them for the quality of their boats, their type of operation and project management, their management of finances and because of their ownership. I can't say more in public, because of my inside knowledge.

In my eyes, Oceanco is not really a yard. It is a building place for ships with an aquisition, management and sales departement, that provides buildings for subcontractors to build yachts under their name. And they are known for their ability to make their customers, lets say, use their offshore accounts accordingly. Except for the last point, this is the case with most Dutch yacht builders but at Oceanco, this is practised to the maximum extend.

I have no problems with Feadship van Lent, Royal Huisman and Vitters / Green Marine (in GB) but my prefered yards for building a larger Yacht are Luerssen, Abeking and / or Fassmer, all on the Weser River. Top quality, honest business, highly correct financial behaviour and very nice people to work with. All boatbuilder by heart and 100 % correct business men.

This project was built in different places than before for pure in-house and profit reasons and they new from the beginning that the boat would not fit under that bridge with the masts errected. If the town major of Rotterdam will allow demolishing that bridge, I bet, somebody will have been bribed. That is at least what the people of Rotterdam think. This bridge is a national monument and they do not want that bridge to be demolished. Plus, the major promised in public, that the bridge would never be demolished again.

Let's wait and see.
