"Employees now had even more reasons to wonder. What did the future hold for their founder? At least part of the answer to that could be found in the shipyards of the Dutch custom yacht builder Oceanco. There, outside Rotterdam, a new creation was secretly taking shape: a 127-meter-long, three-mast schooner about which practically nothing was known, even in the whispering confines of luxury boat builders—except that upon completion, it will be one of the finest sailing yachts in existence. Yeah, I haven't seen any transfer to Oceanco but their newest shed has a dry dock that is 156-meters X 52-meters and can build yachts in the region of 142-meters. Given that this 'project' is supposed to be 127-meters it means it probably can't be built at any of their other older facilities. Then they have the Heerema Zwijndrecht facilities...the dimensions of those sheds are in the photo below.

It's most likely the Y 721 project. The hull sections were moved on pontoons to the Zwijndrecht facility (2019?). At that time there were several pictures/videos on the internet, but it seems that they have been removed in the meantime, at least I couldn't find them anymore.

So that means that the 109-meter Y720 and this supposed Y721 project are in build at the Zwijndrecht facilities. We should see Y720 this year, 'Y721' would have to be sometime in 2022 if it moved there in 2019.

Y 720 was moved to Alblasserdam for outfitting. It's in there in the "old" construction hall.

It will be interesting to see what evolves. Glad he chose a sailing yacht.

But then regardless, why is it that these people have to choose such gigantic ships,...certainly limits their true usefulness.

Hey Brian... could you elaborate more on this? How does it limit their true usefulness? In terms to diminished sailing capability? Practical use by the owner? Marina access? (physical length, draft considerations).

The 2 you mentioned are just a few. The huge crowd of required crew and support personnel would not be inviting to my enjoyment of a vessel,...my downtime. I once worked as a captain of a 60 foot power yacht for a short time, and the owner would purposefully ask me to 'get lost' when he came down for visits. He enjoyed running the boat himself when he visited.

And the larger the vessel, the much more limited you are in places to explore. Can you imagine finding dock space for such a huge yacht. In many cases you would need to be put in with commercial shipping,.....would that be fun??

What necessity for this huge size,...just to claim 'mine is bigger!!'

I think the original builder of Matese Falcon, Tom Perkins had some answers to that question when he questioned his own project.

I would be much more pleased with a vessel I could invite my wife/girlfriend or a few guest on board for a weekend, or week/month on the water enjoyment.

I think if you are Bezos you don’t want to be at a dock when you are on board. The bigger the boat the more time you and your crew can stay away from shore in comfort.

I am surprised Bezos might be heading down the EOS conventional three-masted schooner route as suggested rather than the 106m Black Pearl three masted free standing dynaRig. The extra engineering required for rigging attachments throughout the hull, plus all the powerful automated sail handling systems, let alone extra crew to operate them would seem to make this a pretty daft option for the worlds richest man. Who on earth is advising him? He should spend a day on Black Pearl and then a day on Eos and then decide.
