Does anybody have any ideas or product suggestions for getting rid of heavy brass tarnish, buildup, and corrosion? Structurally there is no damage but it's unsightly. See attached photos.
The bronze turns green to protect itself. If you insist making it shiny again, something like the above or an acid will turn it bronze color again. best way to protect is to spray with with a rattle can clear coat, krylon makes a good one.
That is not Heavy Brass Tarnish and Corrosion, Think of it as Patina. Some folk pay extra for that. Brush on some On-Off gell and hos it off in an hour. Do not inhale the fumes. The equipment will look gold then. When dry, spray with a clear coat. Or, let it go and age properly. You may want to re-read the specs on picture size submission and ask a mod to adjust your pics here.
It s an engine room. Machinery space. Technical area. You re not showing a Ferrari TDF at Amelia or Pebble beach.
ver·di·gris /ˈvərdəˌɡrēs/ noun a bright bluish-green encrustation or patina formed on copper or brass by atmospheric oxidation, consisting of basic copper carbonate.
Appreciate the feedback. Always looking for ways to show pride of ownership whether in the engine room or elsewhere. Yes, it's work to keep it all squared away!
It won't hurt but I agree it looks shoddy. Looking at those picks again I think I'd just put a little Vaseline on a wire brush and brush it off. I don't think you're looking to make them mega-yacht bright, just looking good. The Vaseline will coat as you go. No need to use a sealer. Just brush it off with Vaseline as it appears.
Hey NYCAP, Got some Vaseline and a wire brush and it worked like a charm cleaning the corrosion on the bronze. Thanks for the tip!!
