Heading out of Cape Canaveral this morning and looking for a good place to overnight. This is my vacation so to speak so some place nice with cold beer within a very short walk would be good. Also short in and out from inlet.
I gather you are headed north. St. Augustine is a good town to tie up and walk around as is Fernandina. There's not much to see in between the two. St. Johns river always seems more commercial/Navy.
Any specific marina in St Augustine? the run yesterday from fr lauderdale was a bit better than the forecast. Was able to avg 32kts which helps. Today might have to pull back a bit. I’m hoping I can run last leg tomorrow to Hilton head on the outside.
City Marina. I don't remember the names but there's a good bar on the corner across the street and a really good restaurant about 2 blocks north of there. Don't worry about the speed. From Canaveral you could even do it inside. BTW, you know that with that boat (assuming you have the range) you could make Hilton Head. But if you want to split the run I think I'd go for Fernandina Beach. DK the shoaling conditions at St. Augustine this year but in the past it's had issues. From Fernandina beach you can still make Hilton Head in a day even if held inside. From St. Augustine you'll have added a day if on the inside and have to stop at Fernandina.
The municipal marina is convenient to downtown St. Augustine but I have come to prefer Commachee Cove and then Uber into the restaurant area. If you like Cajun food go to Harry’s. We always eat there when passing through St. Augustine.
Btw, not sure how familiar with coming into Hilton Head from the south but you might want to read this thread: https://www.yachtforums.com/threads/another-boat-hits-a-jetty.32954/page-3 If unfamiliar with the shortcut from the Savanah River over to HH or if coming in at night I'd recommend coming in from Pt. Royal sound to the north. A little bit further, but prettier and much safer.
Harry's! That's the place. Excellent. You can also get a good hamburger there if you're a meat and potatoes guy like me. lol.
You perhaps need to look at the forecasts as you will not be running to Hilton Head tomorrow on the outside unless you enjoy a very rough ride. Today was the last chance for a while. Thursday looks like your next window.
With that being the case I'd recommend going to Fernandina Beach. A long run from Canaveral, so you may want to add a day, it's a nice ride on the inside and you can make it to HH from there on the inside the next day.
St. Augustine city marina, across the street A1 Ale house is a cool spot with great food. Comachee Cove is easy in/out from Ocean and has a good restaurant with great food and a pretty good bar....... They have a great seafood boil at Comachee Cove. Can you sit at a bar with covid? Here in Fort Laud, bars (without food) are closed......restaurants are open. I always stay at Camachee Cove. Fernandina is a very long run in to the marina...... I WOULD'NT be running outside tomorrow.........I looked at the forecast at the mid point.......Jekyll Island.......6-7' seas at 6-7 seconds from the NORTH. No way in hell would I do that.......either stay put a day or take the ICW, which is beautiful in GA and you can run a lot of it at cruise, and enjoy the view.......
A1 Ale House was the bar I couldn't remember. Thanks. As for hanging in a bar with Covid...no comment. He might be able to get away with a run outside to Fernandina Beach if he goes early, taking advantage of the morning calms, but I'd probably opt for the inside unless I was running something like a big SF.
Harry's now you're talking I haven't been to the St Augustine location yet, just Lakeland, Ocala & Gainsville Great food, it's New Orleans cooking. Favorite is Shrimp & Scallop Orleans Millers Ale house is also good food
The conch house marina in st Augustine has one of the coolest bars with a Shanghai door in the floor. Place has a pool too, probably live music on weekends I would guess. Love that place.
I second Comachee Cove Yacht Harbor. Very good restaurant and bar on site and good service department if you need anything. Avoid all that nasty current you have down town. Publix is a short walk over the bridge.
Thanks for all the recommendations. With the weather turning, I pushed on until St Simons and stayed at Morningstar. Nice marina with a great Seafood Restaurant. I ran the ICW yesterday to Hilton Head and it was lovely. Way more go fast areas than I thought. Excited to plan some weekend trips around Hilton Head.
Coastal Kitchen is an amazing restaurant. Their shrimp and grits there is to die for. That marina/inlet is one of my go to inlets, easy in/out, deep, can pump at your slip a lot of times. There's a really cool and good Seafood restaurant/bar on the North end of Hilton Head. It's like a $15 Uber ride from Harbortowne marina, but worth it. Skull Creek Boathouse is the name of it. Really cool spot.
Yes Capt J. Coastal Kitchen was amazing and priced well also. Oysters, Duck Fat French Fries, and seafood Alfredo!
