Hey folks Bringing the vessel to Beaufort NC this October. Anybody have any suggestions/experience with hull painting in that area. Jarret Bay? Its a 50 Post with basically a defect free hull. I have had some 'oh,oh's' repaired over time, but all in all its in very good shape - its just that its a 22 year old gelcoat finish, and some of those spot repairs are showing a little color contrast. Considering a new awlgrip paint stem to stern, gunwale to waterline, with the waterline repainted. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Beau -regard.
Do not know who would be good to do that for you there but would like to suggest that you choose to change color of Hull now to awlgrip ice blue or something instead of Snow White. Looking forward to seeing the results of that project.
I have nothing bad to say about JB. However we pulled a job when the boat sat. "Time is of the essence". Nail down a completed by date.
For what it's worth, the talent is more important than the yard here when it comes to paint. Great yards sometimes have very mediocre painting talent. And that can change by season (or pandemic). Visit, check out the talent, and learn their pricing and timeline during the visit. You'll know when you feel right about the upcoming gig, but it's far too much money to simply go by someone's past good experiences at a yard that might have occurred a year or more ago under very different circumstances.
Looking forward to getting estimates for my upcoming paint job. I have prepared myself to write a large check, but without any experience with painting costs, I hope it doesn't bounce. In preparation for receiving these estimates in a seated position, what range should I expect for a quality job on my 50? Awlgrip or equivalent. As you can see from the avatar there is mostly flat surfaces and very little fairing if any will be necessary. Your collective advice is always appreciated by me.
I’d be nervous about telling the, you need very little fairing. You need as much as you need and you do t want to provide an excuse for the job to less than perfect. I doubt you save much with that claim anyway.
Totally agree. Don't tell them what you think it needs and doesn't. Let them tell you. Then with all the info you can make an informed decision about if they sound like they know their job or are trying to soak you. If you tell them no fairing it's a built in excuse for a poorly done job.
Agreed, it needs what it needs?? And it will get the best available. I was just trying to give a little info, to get a little info. How could I being trying to be saving money, by seeking some estimates with a little info behind it? I'm not looking for tip and roll estimates. I hoped that was obvious. As I said I have no experience in what to expect in pricing for a quality job - I was merely asking for some info on ranges to help myself be informed. The last 2 posts were little help in that regard.
This is also the time to consider the type, not brand, of paint to use. Linear polyurethanes like original Awlgrip are the hardest and have the most gloss. Acrylic polyurethanes like Awlcraft 2000, or Imron are a little softer but easier to repair. When sprayed correctly it's hard to tell one from the other but the technology is different and there are benefits and drawbacks to both. With the investment you're making, make sure you get the product that works best for your purposes.
When I had it done the base price was around $65k though it ended up well past that. The base price didn't include any repairs, boot stripe and painting of all interior fish boxes and compartments. If there are any stress cracks you will want them addressed. Also I'm sure their work load will dictate pricing to. You can send whoever you are considering to the job pictures and they will quote it. The more hardware that can come off the better the job will turn out.
On my post 50 they are currently painting the bridge sole, cockpit sole, all the coming boards up the the fuel fills including removing my hatches and stuff. 10k. This is in wanchese nc.
Indeed, when I begin to speak with the particular vendors about the project, I will be discussing their preferences and why. - then reading the literature. I'll probably be back here with some dumba$$ question or two.
I will be spraying the hull only at this time. I will be using local NC tradesmen (Jarret Bay is high on my list) and each has said they would come to the boat when its berthed in NC in October.
Thanks for that info. Topsides will probably get attention next year, I'll file your number$ for reference. After 21 years in our hands, we thought we'd do a general upgrade over the next 12-18 months. Right now I'm sitting in CT with both my motors undressed to the open cylinders. Redoing heads, valves, turbo, etc. Motors were running fine, but want to give them some new "skin" to help them last another 2 decades. No sense painting the beauty if I can't still cruise at 30 knots 1950 rpm. Complete Furuno NavNet with doppler open array in the Spring. I was thinking of putting a bow thruster in at some point. I'm 72 and can still get into must spots in the wind without too much embarrassment, but I was thinking about the future. Have any Posties installed a thruster? How does your vessel handle with that winch and inflatable on the foredeck? Notice any plowing?
For me it’s great. Capt j can probably chime in about what he thinks about the ride with that weight but I’m coming out of a small boat so the ride to me is like going from a huffy to a Cadillac.
