LUHRS 40 OPEN FUEL TANKS

I see one advertised with a single 423 gal tank. So my guess would be that your saddle tanks are 70 gal. each.

And the "Survey Says"???

You paid the guy (hopefully you got a survey) for the correct specs, did you get them?

That would make sense as the main tank is under the cockpit floor and I believe the saddles are outbound of the engines and there isn't a ton of space there.

Congrats on the boat! I have the exact same year and model. I will be filling up mine on Wednesday to head out again. I do know they hold somewhere right around 70 gallons like NYCAP mentioned. Engines and generator run off main tank. I can let you know Wednesday for sure.

I've never seen a surveyor measure the capacity of any tanks unless they were altered or changed. What they put in your report will be what's in the specs. So I expect you to find 563 total fuel. I find it extremely unlikely Luhrs would change the main tank (423 gals) when adding saddle tanks. Instead they apparently gave an option for saddle tanks for a total of 563. The rest is simple math.

A surveyor better tell you how many fuel tanks are aboard.
A surveyor may have tried to read the tanks factory tags. Most reports from the guys we recommend, use snake cameras to find these tags and further inspection of the tank(s).
A surveyor has libraries to research thru to further offer details on most mfg's boats & yachts. Sadly subscriptions and membership is required to access this data.

Learned something new. Never saw them doing that although I was usually at the helm or between the helm and the surveyor. Like with the OP, there's so much information on a survey and it's been a few years since I've read one. So I couldn't swear to what's in it or not. It'll be interesting to hear from the OP if they told him the gals. of each tank and give a report on the inside of the tanks or just give him the factory spec of 563.

Guess I'll have to wait another day to learn something new. The only time I saw a camera exam of a tank is when something was suspected, and I had my doubts they'd measure the tanks and do the calculations, but it's a safe bet from that boat with only the belly tank that the saddles are 70 each.

I just purchased my 2nd luhrs a 2005 38 open. I see it has 3 tanks main and 2 saddle tanks. Does anyone know of the 3 fuel fill fittings which ones are for which tank? Think there is 1 port and 2 starboard. Boat is 5 hours away and I have a fuel service going to polish the fuel and I need to only add fuel to the saddle tanks.

You should EASILY be able to see that by opening the engine room hatch and looking. If you are having the fuel polished, have everything put in the cockpit tank and leave the saddles bone dry for a week and that will kill 100% of the algae. Run through everything in the cockpit before adding new.

Thanks for the insight. The saddle tanks are empty from what I'm being told. I had 50 gallons put in each saddle since I wasn't sure because the tanks needed to be at least 25% full to do the polishing. One of the draw backs from purchasing a project boat that's 5 hours away. On the last steps now before bringing her home to my port. Had a full overhaul done in the last 6 months so hopefully the journey back will be bug free so to say.

Yes sir you are correct and thanks for the info. I had to give them the info before they would go since I couldn't meet them on site. There working on it as we speak and says the fuel in the main tank looks great very little algae and color is good. Keeping my fingers crossed. Ive never let a vessel sit long enough to need polished so this is new to me. Since it was a full overhaul thought this was one of the most important things to do.

If this helps, my 2003 40 open has twin saddle tanks at 87 gallon, then the main 400. Totals 574.

That's interesting since the specs for at least the 2002 call for 563 gals. with a 423 gal. main tank and 70 gal saddles. Sounds like someone rounded numbers or they changed the tanks in 2003.

What makes you think the fuel needs to be polished? IF your fuel has algae in it, polished fuel just filters it to 2 microns, the algae is still there, just smaller and it tends to grow back within a month or two etc......best thing is once polished, pour Diesel Kleen Clear tank diesel additive in the main tank and transfer everything to the main tank and then run through the fuel, otherwise I've seen it grow back to where you started in a few months.
