No this was a pure race machine.
He'd do the winter Miami race circuit during winter and then ship it up to his home up north. Had a custom lift. Every once in a while he'd drop her down and fly across Lake St Clair come back , into the lift until the next time. Did that for about 8 years. Custom truck and trailer. Eventually sold it to someone in Europe.

When I was a kid, there was a battle on the lake for the fastest boat. Some Rayson Craft with engines by Holman Moody in the 70's so they kept tuning and soon were over 90. One of the three boats' owner decided he was not giving in. He bought a racing boat that would run 130+, but good for nothing else as it wouldn't even stay afloat without the engine running. I have no idea what it was, just recall it in the boat dealership for show and sale, but to my knowledge never sold there.

You might be interested in taking a look at the Mangusta Maxi Open 132E which has a top speed of 35 knots or the Mangusta Gransport 45 which has a top speed of 26 knots.

If you are interested in very fast chase boats in the 60ft to 70ft range, take a look at the Otam yachts. These have maximum speeds of 60 knots and cruising speeds above 40 knots.

Geez. That 140 Pershing is sexy. If you are single, definitely the Pershing. Lol

Not arguing about their look, but that alone has never made any boat go fast.
Can they even reach 30kts? I doubt it.

None of these monsters can move around without outrageous engines, obviously.
In fact, the P140 has even more power installed.
But at least, she can cruise at 35kts all day long, which might seem not much, but at that size it is.
And significantly faster than the 27kts of the PJ anyway, in spite of the fact that the P140 is larger and heavier.

Why not a 70' to 80' Convertible SF setup for the intended use. Open or enclosed bridge with good draft and speed.

The PJ's were shockingly poor performance for their styling. 35 knots cruise is actually a speed we like. That's what our Riva's do. Even with an AB, I'm sure a lot of our cruising will be at that speed. 27 knots is just not high performance.

That's another very good thought as a lot of custom SF could cruise around 40 knots. Better seakeeping and range than an Arneson express. And well, you can go fishing.....or diving from it.

Why didn’t I think of that? Who makes the best boats in that class?

Mmm... As well as among SF builders (some of which deserve utmost respect, but not all), there are also express boats and express boats.
Just by coincidence, earlier today I mentioned here an 80 footer which broke all endurance records, sometimes in atrocious sea conditions.
And the very same boat, originally built as a prototype, was afterwards converted as a "Arneson express", as you might call it.
I appreciate that some of the best SFs can eat Sunseeker Predators for breakfast, but that's picking low-hanging fruits.
Compare them with an Otam 80, and the only doubt will be about how far behind she will leave the best of the SFs - in ANY sea.
For breaking endurance records, I've yet to see anyone attempting that with SFs. :)

If you don't want to custom build because of the time line, Viking has the most models up to 92',and of course Hatteras up tp 70'. Owned a Viking in the past, they have a great reputation and factory support.

I always felt uncomfortable doing 20 t0 40 knots no matter how much I trusted the captain on the SF models that don't have a forward looking front window on the main deck.

Always called that a heads up window. You can add a center window to many SF's depending on salon layout.

Now, this "shadow" boat or whatever we want to call it, whether a Pershing or a Viking, how is it going to go where the main boat goes? Surely it won't have the same range. May not be able to handle the same seas. Definitely the boats you are talking about are too big to be carried as tenders. Now if all you're doing is coastal cruising, you're fine.

Sure it can. I know of a 2003 75' custom SF that makes it from Palm Beach to NY in 2 days.....only stopping for fuel and staying at a marina the first night and only running during the day. Can also tow the SF or express behind the big boat. But a custom SF can easily have 750 NM range at cruise or more. Much much further at slower speeds. A custom SF will take the same seas a 130' Westport will.

The problem is, the Otam 80' is a glorified race boat, not a yacht. Very small interior for a 80' and wouldn't compare it to even a Pershing for interior space. Also very little ammenities on the exterior. Open cockpit, nothing on the bow, etc. Great if you only want to go fast. Not so great if you want a yacht.
