Hi! The holding tank of my Priness 60 from 1998 is very corroded and we managed to get it out this weekend - it turned out that there were 15 spots with serious corrosion, including a direct hole!! So a new tank is needed but which material should I go for: Stainless steel or composite/plastic?
You definitely want to go composite plastic. SS is subject to corrosion from the uric acid that is continuously deposited into the tank.
Fiberglass would be ideal as it won’t permeate like some plastics. If not available then heavy duty plastic. SS is a bad idea for holding tanks... and less than ideal for fuel tanks too
I got a plastic tank 15 years ago from: https://www.oceanlinkinc.com/marine-tanks/holding-tanks-water-tanks I like how they will install the fittings exactly where you need them. Great for a refit. Been trouble free all these years. An option to consider.
Consider A-head and bypass complete or via a small plastic lifting station? http://www.aheadsanitationsystems.com
I installed one to avoid the holding tank/metal boat dilemma. I use a small plastic tank as a lift station with an automatic float switch and high level alarm. The A-Head system sits up and gravity drains overboard. It's plumbed to the deck fitting for pump out and can be locked off and staged as a holding tank if I'm ever in zero-discharge waters. But the system kills all material and discharges an inert product. Takes up some space and not exactly light, but it's a fairly bulletproof system. End result yields auto inert discharge coupled with the ability to function as a holding tank while keeping the moisture and waste off the hull where epoxy barriers or even rubber liners will eventually fail and activate hull electrolysis. Where's my issue of oversight? What did I miss?
Thank you guys, for all your input Some of the suggestions and makes are a bit hard to get as I’m based in Denmark, Europe. But I have got my question answered: SS or composite/plastic - and I will go for a composite/ plastic tank. tek-tanks in the UK has a good reputation so I will contact them and get a quote
