hmmm yes i agree somewhat but i mean, her passengers or guests or whatever would not be able to walk properly with such a list and plus the ocean gushing through the drain holes...

All I can say is, WOW!
The sea trial data from crew diary section is impressive.

    I was there

To all you out there, on Yacht-Forums and guests of this great site.

We appreciate the interest of you guys and are very happy that so much time and effort is spent in surfing the net for details of our amazing yacht. MY e-mail address is on the website and as time and work allows would be very happy to talk 'MF' to anyone.

Maybe it would be great for all interested if we conducted this through Y-F and I am happy to do this. MF is amazing and works and we are ecstatic about her performance and high quality build here in Turkey. We will be heading for the Cote'D'Azur very soon and then to Italy so keep your eyes peeled for an awesome sight.

Keep up the good work and be happy

Cheers Jed White (and neither of the goofing guys is me!!)

    Jed,

I received pictures of MF from Perini this week. Publishing these pics is on hold because one of the magazines paid for first rights to publish. Perini has indicated they will be supplying images and specs soon. If so, we'll put a feature together with your technical expertise. Sort of a... "look at the build" from the engineer's perspective?

In the meantime, instead of people e-mailing you directly with questions, let's use this thread so everyone can follow along and learn. It will save you some time and I will index this thread as well to help anyone doing a Google search find the thread. (it will take a couple of weeks from today). Also, I've changed the title to optimize search results. I'll get busy writing the code this morning to index it and I'm setting up a Perini forum.

I've been following the crew diary. Isn't it GREAT when things go according to plan! Congratulations to the whole team!!

    Jedi & crew of MF

Looking forward to seeing you in the Western Med. "MV" vs "MF"....should be tasty. We had her up to 17.5kts in 18 true last week. Trouble is MV is now on charter until Sept, and the captain won't push her unless either an owner, or Ron Holland is aboard. Where will you be on Sept 16th? That may be our first chance. We'll be in the S of France. See you soon....and congratulations.

    Sloop Rig verses Square Rig

How about a match race between two very different superyachts, one with a sloop rig, and the other with a 'modern' square rig.

    The World's Three Largest
    http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/8815-post5.html

I've had a considerable interest in the aerodynamics of sailing rigs, particularly in defending my unusual 'single-masted ketch rig'
So I was particularly interested in this diary posting:

    ...from the crew's diary...
"There have been many questions about our sailing numbers. In looking through these data, we discovered that our best VMG occurs at around 35 degrees apparent. With full sails set, we may get pretty close to the 30 degrees predicted by the computer/wind tunnel tests. Another interesting aspect, is how the boat performance changes in gusts. Unlike essentially all other sail boats---except, perhaps the AeroRig--- which try to round-up in strong puffs, the Falcon with her DynaRig, simply accelerates, with no effect on the helm and no change in heading. There a number of reasons for this: the center of effort of the rig is relatively low; the keel is relatively long; but most important, there is no change in the shape of the sails. Other rigs tend for the boom to lift and the sail top to twist, which leads to an adverse change in the weather-helm."

I had made reference to the aero characteristics of this 'dyna-rig' in several other previous discussions:

Square Rig Pointing (some aero questions here)
    http://boatdesign.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5991

    Sail Aerodynamics
    http://boatdesign.net/forums/showthread.php?t=457

So Jed White, I am very interested in your aero testing. And my grandest congradulations to Tom Perkins for having the insightfullness to conceive of, and see this project thru.

MirabellaV and Maltese Falcon stretching their legs on the same patch of water. Hmmm, anyone going to invite Athena to this party?
This could be worth the travel to see.

The sail-off of the century! A race of this size with these beautiful boats would literally eclipse the Americas Cup boats. What an awesome sight it would be.

For my part, I just sent an e-mail to Royal Huisman... :)

    Regarding some comments above...

    1. It's not about who wins, or who's faster. Let's not reduce something of historical significance down to something simplistic.

    2. Hopefully our discussion will set an idea in motion, but don't expect YF to get an exclusive. This is something for the whole world to behold and all forms of press should be included.

I'm thankful we have a medium like the net (and YF!) to bring about collective ideas. Speaking of... over the past year, we've watched OUR new topics become similar articles in various yachting magazines. Matter of fact... builders are getting requests for "construction images" now! :D

Jed, Joe... I'll drop you notes when I hear back from RH. Let's hope Athena can join the party!

Having all the aforementioned vessels in one place at one time under sail........ Even the wind would have to give consideration to being humbled when confronted with such a sight.
The only one that could lose is the enthusiast that isn't there to see it happening.
