Removing Scratches from Window Glass

    Hello,

    Has any one heard of removing scratches from window glass? I'm looking at a boat that has scratches on the exterior of the windows which is bothering me to see looking out. Anyone ever heard of removing scratches by polishing windows etc? Anyone with a recommendation on a company/service in Florida that does that?

    Glass Rezz out of PSL does excellent restoration work and they cover the southeast U.S..

    You can polish the scratches yourself by using Cerium Oxide polishing powder. I have tried it myself. Just mix a small amount of powder and water to make a milk-like mixture. Then apply the mixture to the polishing disk before turning it on. You could also use a spray bottle to apply the mixture to the polishing pad.

    I just had my 3 hatches restored to like new using 3M 39165 Headlight Restoration Kit. They didn't have scratches but you could barely see out of them from the oxidation. Now, they are crystal clear.

    I've been thinking about this. The windows are recessed into the hull a little bit, maybe 1". So how did the windows get all scratched up, but the hull didn't? It sounds to me like the entire boat got all scratched up in that area and they fixed the hull and cheaped out on replacing the windows.

    hmmm that's a thought and yes possibly.

    I think maybe because the side of the boat that the windows are scratched (port side) which is the side they dock, possibly something like a hanging hose with a steel handle nozzle may have been the culprit. I saw the hose wrapped there the other day with the metal handle nozzle and thought it may have caused it since it's on the same level. The metal handle nozzle protrudes out so I can see something like that doing the damage.

    What about restoring plastic such as those found on center consoles, any suggestions?

    I've had good luck using either the Meguirs system or Novus system (3 steps). Both make a heavy, fine, and plastic polish. It takes a lot of elbow grease and time, and once they turn, you have to keep up with it or it turns again really easily. A lot of times just easier to replace and get another 10 years out of it.
