I have finally decided to go with the luxury boat instead of the go fast boat so this brings me to the world of post one of my questions is what was the last year that post had put Detroits in their boats between the 42 and 47 foot range
It may not be that easy to pick a certain year. I'm sure there were a few years of choosing between Detroits\Volvo\Mann\Cummins based on the model. But as a rule, late 90's seems to be the end of 2 cycle Detroits for Post and Ocean.
I like my Volvo's. Pretty efficient. TAMD 73 P. The only thing I don't like is the early ECU modules have a tendency to go bad due to moisture and are expensive to replace and program and my port is very sensitive to temperature dips below 55 degrees. I think it is a slight voltage issue due to temp but can eventually get it started from a cold start once engine room warms.
Thru the years of following the Post threads, I have not heard many Volvo / Post. Just a few and I would consider (from YF threads) near rare. Volvos have a near cult following on all boat brands. Either you like them or don't. From other threads I understand the turbo noise is a lil louder on some installations. More comments on ECUs failing near often and the expense of these. I'm an ole Bertram guy but the Post owners here on YF are great and luv their ships. Post Kids are Cool. 71s Rule.
Detroit seem the way to go from what I've been seeing on the forums ECU problems expense kind of go together well that helps me make up my mind I think it'll be Detroit With that being said let the search begin 89 and newer 42 to 47 with Detroit's please feel free to to chime in I'm located in the ocean state let me know what's out there thanks everyone
By the way, I'm in no way complaining about the motors as they are fuel efficient run clean and have plenty of power to move the boat and are extremely quite on the troll compared to Caterpillars, Detroits and the like. The ECU is the only issue I've had in 5 years and bought it that way, but is really only an issue when I launch cold and in November when the boat can sit for a couple weeks between runs. Ill be cleaning the connections this spring because they are very sensitive to voltage drop, and even a little corrosion creates enough impedance in cold temps. I looked a a number of boats when shopping and the Volvo's are common in 42 post 1998's through 2001. I believe all the Models above 42 have larger power plants and you will not find them with the Volvo's in these years.
Bill, Dave Parker has a 50 with 8-92's that he's had for 10 years. Give him a call about it. It's 50' hull #1
Easily corrected. The timing & location usually sux and a sudden hit on the check book. Ask what a Volvo ECM cost? Working a lighting hit on a pair of Cummins 8.3s with SmartCrap (no relation) displays and controls. $45K to make all work again not including the helm glass work for the latest model of displays. I was 200 feet away. Half of my electronics were fried. Volvo equipment past me is still down from July 7. Mostly the insurance companys speed in the claim. Boat still tied to the dock. Murphy gauges were keeping a pair of C-32s down on a newer Hat past the Volvos. I luv the fancy stuff when it runs. Sux when the fancy stuff is down for electronic issues. No junk on our plane Detroits. e-bay helped fix my electronics. Best-Buy replaced my TVs. I have always been mobile. The expenses of that fancy electronic junk will never be recovered for these other folks IMO. K.I.S.S 71s rule.
