Yeah, that photo has been around for a while. Seems to get new life with each new freeze. Still a haunting photo though - imagine a night time image of that horror.

Always intrigued me . Cold enough to freeze but not snow. Did the water come from some other source? Look at some of the boats deeper in the scene.

Freezing rain. Rain from warmer air above into below-freezing air, ground, and boats below. The rain drop may be supercooled, below freezing but not yet frozen until they impact something. Or they are near freezing, and impact with below freezing objects freezes the water quickly. We deal with that in flight, supercooled droplets can build up ice very quickly.

Gotcha 30W, but if you look deep into the photo (my eyes aren't great) does it seem those boats are unaffected?? Why's the trawler down on the port? Dunno. I read too much Sherlock Holmes

This seems to have somewhat melted.

So why is that the only boat frozen over like that in this picture?

Maybe a broken water main on the pier, maybe the fire dept had something to do with it and that is residual damage from spray blow back.....

The water is ice free.

I wondered about that years ago when I first saw these pics. I just did a little googling, one discussion from long ago mentioned that the ice was from spray off the water from very high winds, not a true ice storm. So, only places where the waves broke and sprayed got a lot of ice, like along the lee shore, and downwind of anything waves would splash against. If there was a breakwall protecting some boats, that could have caused them to get coated with ice, but not others.

After seeing these pics, I wondered what would I do if it happened here? In my marina employee days, and as a boat owner, how would I protect the boats? Farmers use various means to protect fruit from freezes. Maybe running a sprinkler on a boat would keep it above freezing. Or it would all freeze and sink the boat? Next day, hosing off boats might be enough, especially as the sun comes up.
