I am on a 50m and we are thinking of upgrading our shore power system from 100KVA to 120/150KVA, as our system is to small. Can anyone recommend a good system? I have a choice between ATLAS (which is good and reliable), MAGNUS and EEKLES. Does anyone know of MAGNUS or EEKLES and are they good and reliable systems? Thanks
All three companies and their systems are well known in the industry. Atlas is US, Magnum British and Eekels is a Dutch company but their shore power systems are products from a company they aquired only in 2011. The Dutch company works a lot in the commercial shipping world and has a good reputation there with its own products. We have the Atlas shore power and frequency converter systems in several bigger boats. The only problem I have with the Atlas system is, I tend to forget which brand it is, because it works so flawless and never appears in any repair record, the engineer turns in for signature, that I do not care about them .
Yes, I have also good experience with Atlas. Our system is getting old and to small for our boat now, with all the extras that come in over the years, so an upgrade is in its place. I have almost convinced management and have got a few quotes in and I prefer Atlas but they are the most expencive. Have seen the Eekles and I just love the small size of it. I have heard from 1 guy as you say, they have just bought the company a few years back (and Eekles has been in the hands of a few companies before hand) and he was worried about the service availability they have around the world. They are the cheapest and I am wondering if there is a reason for it. As you know, it is not always a good idea to go the cheaper way, but to convince management and owner about that is a different project in its own
That is exactly the point I was trying to make about Eekels. We have an old saying in Europe: "Anyone buying cheap, buys twice". The Atlas system is bit bigger and heavier than the Dutch equipment but it is the more beefy system. A 50 meter boat should have enough space for that. The British system is not on my radar, so I could not tell good or bad. With the other two, I would always go for Atlas but I do not have to convince any ownership .
I have been an Atlas fan for many years and have used mostly the Ultra Hi Power series. I have heard good things about the Magnus things and dire things about the Eekels. I have also had Helionetics and Dockmate not that either is still manufactured.
