We are off to Eleuthera and going from Harbour Island then to Highbourne. Looking for suggestions of places to anchor for a nice lunch to break up the run? Otherwise we should be cruising around 12 knts
Hmmm... Which way are you going from HI to HB? Through Current Cut or towards Nassau and then cutting down? There are not many choices either way really. The West side of Ship Channel Cay or at Allen's perhaps.
Hmmm. It's a charter. We ve done ships channel and Alan. Was hoping to see more of Eleuthera. I guess Spanish wells isn't exactly half way, but worth a look ?...
It's 100 miles from Harbour Island to Highbourne if you come out of the Devil's Backbone and around the west side and down the bank. The bank is very scenic and can anchor anywhere, but nothing to really see. Spanish Wells is only miles from Harbour Island.....it's interesting to rent a golf cart, cruise around the whole island in 1-2 hours and get out of there.....
Forget highborne anyway... Anchor at normans or shroud, it is 100 times better. better view, better scenery, better snorkeling, better beaches, better sandbars. There is so much to enjoy at Normans and Shroud compared to highborne. Posted from Lee Stocking, southern exumas
Hmmm... If that is the case look at anchoring off the beach on the north side of Current. Or over by Egg Island. And as noted, Spanishwells is worth a stop. Have lunch at the Ship Yard restaurant. Good food and great view.
I guess it depends on if you're looking down or out. Looking down, you might see scenery. Looking out, not so much.
And it's only like 60 or so miles to HB from HI. So you'd have time to stop for lunch if you leave early enough.
Indeed I ve had days on the bank when you could spend hours looking thru the glassy water at incredible scenery unfortunately these days are pretty rare 60nm at 12kts is still a good five hours... Why spend so much time underway on a charter when you don't have to?
The bank between the West side of Spanish Wells is scenic in the water color and rocks on the bottom if you're running. BUT, there is nothing to see if you're anchored in one spot......no islands etc. etc.....
Finley Cay is on the edge of the sand bores. Super picturesque and about 1/2 way in between HI and HighBourne. Another cool area is about halfway between six shillings and the Exuma sound drop off there are these weird coral heads. We call them the donuts. They are perfectly round with a hole in the center of sand. If you like to spearfish or free dive these are a good place to stop. They are about 50-200' in diameter and in about 15-30' of water.
Thanks for the information. We brought a pilot on board and did the devils backbone. Harbour island was pretty special. The cut through the village of Spanish wells was very cool. It was a long run to Highbourne but weather was great and boat was great.
