Did anybody lose a fender? Mystery of the giant ship 'bumper' that has washed up on the Norfolk coast | Mail Online
Wow thats a pretty serious fender surprised no one has claimed it. Wouldn't want to run into it in the middle of the night
The boiinnngg would probably wake up the watchstander. But if you have to run into something it might as well be big rubber fender.
We have recently bought a computer program and service, that shows lost containers floating around the seven seas. As most of the newer containers are equipped with a GPS tracking system, you can watch their position all over the world. When they get washed over board in a storm and not sinking to the bottom, they can still be tracked. Nice tool for yachts crossing the oceans, as a floating container can cause some substantial damage to a yacht, if not sink it. Combined with other online services like monster wave prediction and warning, Radar, ARPA and weather overlay plus AIS, all displayed on the ECDIS system, navigating large yachts and SOLAS cargo ships gets safer and safer.
in you tube you can see a video of a very large freighter in a heavy storm ......... I think those fenders are the stuff you see falling outboard the vessel ...
Those big buddys do not fall off ships. Below a picture, where they normally live. Sometimes they simply corrode off their moorings and just flaot away with the tide. Their big customers (cargo vessels) work pretty hard on their metall fastenings until one of those fenders only holds on one corroded screw and off they go.
