NOAA Nautical Chart 11470 land mark demolition scheduled for July 16 at 6:45 a.m. FPL | Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center
Just off the phone with Tom Serio who is planning to wake up before roosters call to see Lauderdale's signature structures fall. I didn't intend for that to rhyme.
I wish they left them. I love seeing them on the way back from the Bahamas. The sight of them always gave me the feeling of getting home or arriving! Back in the day before GPS it was a nice sight to see them on the way back, that or Hillsboro Inlet Light.....
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ We lost the stacks in Lakeworth Inlet a bit back and I had the same feeling...
I found a great vantage point to watch them come down with a back up spot incase my first choice is blocked off. If you never seen an implosion live, I would suggest you set the alarm and get some coffee. It is incredible.
I assume it will be live on this webcam; Port Everglades Webcam - A Fort Lauderdale Cruise Ship Web Cam
According to the site it will be live. My only problem is every time I go to the site lately, all I see is a video of a cruise ship departing.
If you can't catch a plane to see this, go to the FPL website, they will stream it live tomorrow morning. For those that are going, the Federal Highway over pass east of the airport is a great vantage point. Hopefully they will let us watch it from there. Since this is not an expressway, I assume we can "walk" on US1.
Well, up at 3:45 AM to get down to Ft Lauderdale and get my position on top of the Broward Convention Center for some shots of the stack demolition scheduled for 6:45 AM. Thankfully the weather held out and didn't rain on our parade or camera gear. FPL put on a bit of a party and had former workers from the plant and local politicians on hand for the event. Here's the video I put up on YouTube courtesy of The Triton. The big bangs start about a minute into the video. Unfortunately, all you navigators by sea and by land will have to scope out new landmarks as the FPL smokestacks are no longer. I'll post some stills later. Time for a nap. Demolition of Port Everglades smokestacks by Capt. Tom Serio for The Triton - YouTube
Tom, great video of the fall. I was a bit closer and the sound was impressive. I wonder if they will implode the Hilton on the SW corner of the airport when it's time for it to go.
Thanks for the video Tom. I watched it in person from a boat out in the port this morning. Pretty cool and sad at the same time. I did read in some marine publication a while back that because the stacks were such a long time land mark and ATON that FPL was going to put something up to replace them. Anybody else hear that or know anything about it?
