I must admit, there are only a very small number of yards in the world being capable of building a yacht like this.

The propulsion system seems to be a CODAG / CODOG type propulsion. 4 Waterjets concisting of two steerable units and two booster units. Looking at the exhaust stacks (perfectly designed and placed) I would estimate two big gas turbines (like the LM 2500) and some diesel propulsion engines. The smallest stacks at the rear probably diesel gensets. Cant see the air intakes jet, maybe in the main mast? This engine room needs a lot of fresh air!

Interesting to see the (slow speed ?) rudders / stabilizers (?) under the stern. They look like the B&V Industry rudder/stabilizer system. As mentioned on this forum before, the whole propulsion system looks like one being proposed by B&V.

Reckon the hull lines and the bulbous bow, I would estimate this yacht capable of doing at least 30 Kts+, cruising 20 Kts+.

I take my hat off to the builder, what a ship !!!!!!

Really impressive! The finished yacht looks much better than what we had seen before. Unfortunately, I lost all sense of proportion with this giga-megas, they not only increase in size, everything seems to grow, so that this yacht looks smaller than Eclipse being significantly larger. Does anybody know the gross tonage of our new No.1?

Agree, with this kind of investment, at least a few more thoughts should have gone into the design. A quick fix could be to paint the fashion plates greyish, a more expensive would be to remove the second deck from the top...:)

Seems like owners from the Arab areas dont want alot of sundeck areas.
They always want more inside areas.

Not a real outdoor sundeck or pool area.

Yes, I think that would look good. Other than that, she's a very good looking boat. When yachts get large they can start to look like car ferries, like some recent launches.

I have to say, some of the lines remind me of the B&V Eco/Enigma.

True, no pool, no jacuzzis, no Hangar, and looks like no Beach club in the lower deck, a High Speed Passenger Ferry.

Maybe this is why there is a faster build time.

Sorry... anticlimax for me. The real achivement I think was the engineering to the vessel - massive hats off! They could of added a different hull colour or something....

There could be pools and jacuzzi's indoors, and maybe a heli hangar of the "elevator" type?
    Where are the tenders located?

The XXXL shiny exhausts are a bit over the top for me..the yachting equivalent of six after market exhausts on a Mercedes SLS AMG..

    Exhaust stacks

But I believe they are needed. Those two GT convert some 20.000.000 cubic feet of fresh air per hour into exhaust gas. And this does not incude the need for the big diesel engines. If they breath ambient air from the engine room, there will be a nice draught in it. The perfect position and angle plus the length of the exhaust stacks lead to my assumption that there was some wind tunnel testing for this issue. They are located at the point of lowest pressure of the aerodynamic body (at 30 + X Kts).

The design of Azzam is a typical example of a state yacht from this part of the world. And it is a full custom yacht. The owner gets what he wants.

If the newspapers are correct, this yacht will mostly be used to steam from its harbour in the UAE to the beautifull resorts of the Seychelles and Maledives and back. If this is correct, and after looking at the FB pictures, the yacht must have some loitering or even DP capability. The B&V rudder/stabilizer system has no zero speed stab capability. They are high speed devices. This sleek high speed hull must have some rolling tendency. I believe that these openings mid hull below the waterline are retractable zero speed stabilizers. The absense of visible bow and stern thrusters is asking for some kind of retractable azimuth propulsion systems. Without those systems, a 180 Meter boat with only 2 steerable Waterjets would not fulfill the IMO/SOLAS regs for maneuverability.

A great boat with very complex and interesting systems. I am looking forward to the first high speed pictures. Again, hats off to the builder.

    Cheers

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this is the propulsion concept Azzam is based upon.

Which marinas can handle a yacht of this size?
Or will she end up in a purpose built berth somewhere in the Middle East like the "Dubai" yacht?

A body of this size steaming through the sea at speeds of 30 Kts or above will need at least 100 feet of water below the keel, otherwise causing damage to the bottom of the sea or riverbanks. Thats why I believe, if she will be cruising in shallow waters like the coral reefs of the Seychelles, this vessel will need some kind of low speed propulsion, stabilization and steering.

It would surprise me, if we will see her in the Med or around the Caribbean a lot. And with an owner like her being head of state, she will be able to occupy the berth of any cruiseship if she/he wants.

    Hi,

You are correct from what I have heard on the jungle telegraph not long after the contract was signed.

The "doner" vessel that the propulsion engineering was done for originally was written up right here at YF.

If you equip your boat with 2 of those babys each, that will give you some performance at least.:)
