Hi folks, I plan to buy a boat in Holland and cruise the canals and rivers of Holland, Belgium, and France. I have not been able to find out if it is legal for me, being a yank, to register the boat in Holland. I know it is not required to be registered, but once I leave Holland the Belgian and Franch authorities will want proof of ownership, which the registration certificate gives. Anyone KNOW the answer? Thanks in advance for the info. Cactus
The short answer is yes but I do not know the details. Your yacht broker will be able to refer you to a maritime lawyer who can direct you on the best course of action.
It's more expensive to register within the EU with many owners opting for tax favourable havens of BVI , Cayman Islands.., bahamas etc it's always been common practice to register vessels in locations for tax reasons .
If you are able to arrange delivery to Malta and register your boat there, you will pay about 14% less in vat. Paul
