Thanks for the comments. I decided to do nothing on the engine size. We like the boat too much. I agree about the Cat 3208 HP ratings. I have spec sheets from Cat and they only show the 3208 in 425hp, 375hp, and 210hp (I think). I can call Cat, give them the serial numbers and end the discussion. I will do this next week. As for changing the re-circ pumps I can only say that my last name is Murphy and if I have everything put back together without changing them they will both take a major dump about 2 months later. I am going to have them changed. I am also having new impellers put in the raw water pumps and there is a spare pump on the boat. Remember, the seller agreed to the engine repairs as well as a $5000 hold back for anything else that might pop up. I want to have as much done as possible as these engines are an unknown to me and I don't like surprises.
Ah, thank you. I was allready curious about that and found out that the Perkins is the 3058 series. However, the fat 3208 should be a really durable beast as well. It´s just that I´m a fan of the Perkins engine, I´d love to have a pair of those in my boat (have to live with Volvos )
Hi, The yellow Perkins is actually a 3056, the Perkins symbol was visible on the fwd left topside of the cylinder head on one I used as an Emergency Genset. So am I , if I were to buy my own motor boat a 6-354 would be high on the preferred equipment list. If it were a sailboat a 4-236 would do just nicely too.
I had a Perkins 6-354 turbo in one of my personal boats for many years. It was a great motor, but leaked oil everywhere.....
I was thinking another company turbo'd the 3208 Cat when they first came out and they were rated at around 300hp. I can't recall the name of the company but, it was a fairly popular package. It was about the only thing available to replace a large block gas engine in the 31' to 36' foot range in the early 80's
Well I thought I might offer an update. When the technician pulled the cooling systems apart to have the heat exchangers cleaned an interesting discovery was made. There is a large mounting bracket that holds the heat exchanger for the transmission cooler. Between that plate that is 1/2" thick is a brass plate and then the exchanger. Well the brass plates were both completly gone and the 1/2" mounting bracket was eaten more than half way through. Also one of the tranny heat exchangers was so packed with crap it could not be cleaned. All of that alone came to about $1800 just in parts. A discovery like this is something I was afraid of. Fortunately I asked for a $5000 hold back at the conclusion of the sale. If there were no surprises, like this one, the seller gets the $5k. The seller will get some of his money but more important for me is I am going to have engines that will be in really good condition. Now that I should have everything up to date with the engines I will be doing all of the scheduled maintenance per Cat's schedule. I purchased a Yacht Maintenance Software package that allows me to schedule all of my maintenance at one time and program reminders. When I start the program it will give me reminders for scheduled PM. I should have my boat back a week from tomorrow and I am anxious to start on all of the other projects that need done. It's great to be boating again. I can't wait to actually do some.
I would definately take apart and do the other engine's heat exchangers knowing this. It sounds like an electrolysis issue. As for the tranny cooler, usually it is a straight one and a rod can be stuck through each of the passages to clear them out.......I've seen zinc pencils stuck inside the passages a lot of times but was able to rod them out then clean the cooler......
Both engines are being done. Both of these "brackets" are made of 1/2" plate steel and mount under the turbo, turn 90 degrees and then trans heat exchangers mount there. I'm having the cooling systems completely gone through on both engines. All 4 heat exchangers have been removed, cleaned and tested; one new raw water pump and impeller and a new impellor on the other; new circ pumps while everything is apart; and all zincs, bad hoses, clamps, etc. replaced. Hopefully this will take care of everything. And the best part was the seller allowed over $11k for engine repair.
Sounds like the tranny zinks were not inspected regularly. They can be a PITA on 3208's and removing the cooler to clean it is worse but worth while as you have found. Remember there are two zinks in the transmission coolers.
