My son the 13 year old expert read your message and tells me that Octopus is larger than Savaronna. Yes or No?
Me correct? Nah' the 13 year old with great aspirations was correct..... I often ask him if I can be captain, cabin boy, dishwasher, etc. when he buys his first boat, "Don't worry Dad, there'll always be a place for you on my boats." What a kind lad......(you have to be kind to your children you know, they pick the nursing home you go into....) Tom D.
Biggest Yacht The biggest Yacht in the world is without no doubt HDW Al Salamah 122.7m built 1999 Delivery 1999 Measuring 12.400 BRT Power 14.000 kW Length 122,70 m Width 23,50 m Height 13,58 m Picture HDW side: http://195.30.251.186/images/schiffe_big_real/big_341_2.jpg Look at the measuring and the width. When you talk about the length of a ship you must take care, if you talk about Lpp or Loa. If shipbuilders are talking about the length of a ship they mostly mention the Lpp not Loa (length over all). If you want to measure how big a ship is, you should take the BRT. Bernd
Correction on Mirabella V Mirabella V was built by VT Group plc (formerly Vosper Thorneycroft) of Southampton, England, not Royal Huisman (unfortunately). On an FYI basis here are a few other mentions for your list, Mirabella V has: The heaviest lifting keel (150 t) The tallest mast (88.5m or 290ft) The largest mainsail 1557m2 (16,760ft2) The largest sail 1833m2 (19,730ft2) The longest boom (28m 82 ft) Her hull is the largest piece of composite material in the world. She cannot pass under any bridge, and as such is the highest vessel on the sea (only beaten by oil platforms, which are not really vessels).

Performance is a key demand of this pioneering vessel, with special emphasis on windward ability, and her brief has called for a capability of exceeding 20 kts. under sail. The vast experience gained from the earlier Mirabellas will ensure that this ground breaking yacht will incorporate every facility for the luxury corporate and private charter market
Mirabella V Sets Sail Press April 15, 2004 Information and picture was taken from: http://www.mirabellayachts.com/mirabella5 The 245 foot (75 metre) Mirabella V, the world's largest sloop, set her sails at sea for the first time this week as part of her sea trials before handing over to her owner. On board were owner Joseph Vittoria, designer Ron Holland, composite engineer Julian Smith, sail maker Robbie Doyle, project manager Paul Johnson and many representatives of VT Shipbuilding and their contractors.
Actually I would like to make a suggestion on the largest yacht. The Octopus should be classified as the world's largest yacht with luxury paint. This is quite a feat to put Awlgrip on. Paul Allen specifically asked for this option. It is very difficult to apply paint to look acceptable with this size of vessel. It is also Lurssen's claim to fame on this Octopus paint project. The other two larger yachts never were professionally painted. They were rolled on paint just like the ocean liner. Wait until the next Lurssen project turn out the boat for Larry E. which will displace Paul Allen's boat.
Optopus is of course up to now the most expensive yacht in the world. With a lot of special figures (submarine, heli-hanger and so on). But the largest, biggest (not the longest) yacht is the Al Salamah. Both were built at HDW. Lürssen made the acquisition and the owner decks at HDW. The whole rest was done by the Kieler shipyard, also the painting. For details go to http://www.yachtforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=85
Optopus Paintwork Florakis (Greece) did the paintwork and the smoothing with filler on the outside above waterline. All surface preparation and the other paintwork ( inside and below waterline) was done by Geuer, Peiniger two local companies. But all was done as subcontracts for HDW (not Lürssen). Octopus is a HDW ship!
Octopus I totally agree with you, archnav! HDW is sad that there is the Lürssen logo on her supersturcture and not that of HDW! Now its time that HDW build his own yachts after the enormous deliveries of Al Salamah, Octopus and not to forget the conversion of Christina! There are already rumours that HDW could build a 150m yacht very soon! Does anyone has more informations about that?
Yachtforums, I would like to point out that Octopus is not the largest private yacht in the world anymore, its Le120/Rising Sun is. And Le120/Rising Sun is the largest yacht that an American owns. Le120/Rising Sun is 138m long. Her owner is Larry Ellison.
We had the pleasure of visiting LE120 during its fairing stages. That thing is a monster. We got dizzy looking down from the scaffolding levels. I can't believe one company painting it...Other german boat builder usually 2 paint company to do it since it's too big of a project for one. When is Rising Sun due? I might have to make a trip to Lemwerder again. I had the previledge to visit Octopus last summer at Kiel prior to delivery.
Mirabella V's building challenges You just have to get a laugh out of this one. What was Joe Vittoria's most challenging task in getting this new $50M superyacht built?? The toughest task during this three-year project was,"convincing the wife," Joe Vittoria said emphatically. I think a lot folks can relate to that reguardless of the size vessel!
Platinum Lets then start to remember (and properly consider) that 160m "Platinum" Project today is floating ... http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2937
