We are planing a possible cruise up the Hudson River and I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of the physical restrictions - ie lowest bridge heights, max beam in the locks, depth. We have an air draft of 62ft and a beam of 33ft. I have ordered the guide books, but am keen to hear from someone who has actually done it.

Has anyone cruised the river and if so, how far up do you think we would get?

Also, can anyone recommend any decent docks for a 200ft yacht along the way - I understand the limitations, but it doesn't hurt to ask :)

There are no locks on the estuary itself, and the height restriction to the Federal dam at Troy is 138' under the Tappan Zee Bridge, with channel drafts between 32' and ~200'. The Troy lock is over 500' long, around 45' wide, and just under 20' deep on the low side. Above there, I don't know much for a boat your size.

I live on the west shore of the river, right by West Point. West Point South Dock can accommodate 200', and is an easy hop from New York City. There are also marinas slightly further north that are also an easy reach in a day, but I believe they're equipped for under 150'. In NYC, North Cover may be your best bet, I believe they can handle up to 200'. Otherwise, Chelsea Piers may be able to accommodate you.

    Mike,
I went up there a few years ago and was able to stop at Haverstraw Marina. We then took the tender a few more miles up the river and stopped at a small marina within walking distance of West Point.
I've also come all the way down from Troy on a smaller boat. It's a really nice trip!

You can dock at Troy. You may be able to get in at Waterford, but that dock would have to be cleared for you. I'd suggest docking at Troy or W.P. and taking the launch beyond that. It's a beautiful run up the Hudson, especially over the next few weeks as the fall colors peak, but it's much more enjoyable in a boat around 50' or less. BTW, you can meet some serious ship and barge traffic so make sure everyone knows where you are (VHF).

Good looking out there cap. I came through there in May, but didn't remember that. Maybe due to 5 days on the Erie Canal (or a senior moment:eek: ) For the life of me I just don't remember it. 200' doesn't belong past the locks though anyway.
