Cammenga Yachts

    I'm doing some research on the old Dutch yard known as Cammenga Jacht-en Scheepswerf and was wondering if anyone can tell me what became of the yard. I know it is now defunct, but wondered if it was purchased by some other yard, or whether it simply went gently into that good night.

    A classic Dutch builder, Cammenga was located in Wormerveer, Holland, just outside of Amsterdam. The yard built many steel yachts (both power and sail) until its demise in the late 1970s. Many of its yachts were designed by Willem de Vries Lentsch, including the "Noordzee" (18.5 meters), "Atlantic" (22 meters) and "Pacific" (25 meters) classes of power vessels. See:

    Cammenga also apparently built a series of three schooners (35 meters) named Magistral, Marline and Johann Smidt. See:

    Although some may find these Cammenga yachts as stodgy and conservative in comparison with more modern designs, to my old eyes, they are classic beauties. I'm happy to see a mini-revival of these classic designs by the likes of Bloemsma & van Breemen ("Griffioen"). See:

    With reference to the Yacht you call 'S Cape' she was better known as 'Midnight Saga'. I worked on her in the Med in the early '90s.

    She was a little radical as she was a displacement hull but fitted with high-ish speed Ruston-Paxman locomotive engines.

    We did one charter where we took her as far into Venice, Italy as a boat that size could go, the locals hated the 24hr gensets so after 3 days we were asked to leave.

    On the way back we went stern-to the old town of Dubrovnic in Yugoslavia. Early one morning I was watching CNN when our picture came into a sweeping shot of the town on TV. I turned up the volume and hear the reporter saying troops were advancing. I woke the skipper, engines started and we left straight for Bari,Italy but could see the shells hitting. Its still the last stamp on the last page of my old passport.

    Cammenga also built five 61' full displacement trawlers designed by DeVries Lentsch. I sold a 1967 that was built for Mr. Strik, one of Cammenga's NAs, and has been in continuous use since with only 4 known owners. The current owner did her first full refit a few years ago. Last I heard, all 5 of these vessels are still cruising.

    I have been in touch with 2 of the 5 current owners:

    (1) M/V Migrant: I sold this yacht to her current owner in 2003. He did an extensive refit, cruised US & Caribbean, then shipped her to Europe.

    (2) M/V N***: A spectacular Cammenga owned by a YF member. Probably cruising the Caribbean.

    She had to be a supper yacht at the time. She has great lines still.

    I once worked for an owner of a CC 58' Roamer, who swore that his next boat was going to be an honest to goodness ocean vessel....a Cammenga
