Blohm & Voss has stood for quality and engineering in shipbuilding for 125 years. Today, Blohm + Voss is a highly specialized enterprise in which sophisticated products are produced for the world market. The activities of Blohm + Voss can be summed up in these areas: Naval vessels, fast passenger, ferry or cargo ships and…Mega yachts. Blohm & Voss is recognized in world markets in these sectors with innovative technologies. With the development of the MEKO® design concept in the seventies, Blohm & Voss revolutionized the construction of naval vessels and went from being a traditional shipyard to a systems company for marine high technology. Blohm & Voss began building mega yachts from the middle of the 1980’s onwards. With the development of the "fast monohull concept", Blohm & Voss is poising itself to set new standards for the new millennium in the construction of fast and economical passenger ships and yachts. Blohm & Voss has built several very unique yachts, including the 73 meter “ECO’, which was launched in 1991 and was capable of reaching 37 knots. Another notable yacht is the 105 meter “Lady Moura”, with overall dimensions that rival a cruise ship. Blohm & Voss yachts are built in Hamburg, Germany, and they are a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp Werften.
Blohm and Voss Naval Vessels In the history of naval Vessels, Blohm and Voss created one of the world's most famous of them all: The battleship Bismark.
Some problems here I have to say some information here lacks. Please see here for more references: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blohm_+_Voss 1. B+V had also done Water Aircrafts. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategorie:Blohm&Voss-Flugzeug 2. 80% of the company was sold from Thyssen to an Abou Dhabi Sheik. It does not belong to Thyssen anymore. Please update that. 3. This yacht was not made in B+V but in a Kiel Shipyard. The Shipyard is called HDW. See more here: http://www.hdw.de/de/ http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howaldtswerke-Deutsche_Werft Those were the BV yachts: Savarona (28. Februar 1931) Katalina (1987) Lady Moura (31. Mai 1990) Golden Odyssey (25. Mai 1990) ECO (20. August 1991) Today Enigma. Sigma (2008) Safari (2008) Orca (2009) Eclipse (2009
The 2nd yacht on the list, Katalina, was started as a HDW project. The yard fell into fincanical problems halfway through. The yard was bought by a holding company(Ross Industrie Gmhb) which was a shell company while the project was finished. As the yacht was being finished, word leaked out that Ross/HDW was being sold to B & V. HDW and B&V had been competitors for a 100 years and a little petty sabotage went on. I was on the build project and stayed with the boat for 5 years. Now called Astarte 11 http://www.yachtmati.com/astarteii/index.htm
Hi, When A was built at HDW it was known as Project Sigma which you have listed above as a B and V Yacht and the yard was under the control of Thyssen Krupp ( who knows if it will be for much longer) as was B and V. Wasn't OCTOPUS also done at HDW and is known as Lurrsen Yacht now?
Hi, The last time I was in B and V (last year) there was a shell plate section off Bismark right out in the open for anyone in the yard to see.
What ever happened to....... What ever happened to the yacht that B&V built for Levitt (of Levittown fame) back in 1976? Regretably I can't remember the vessel's name but it was huge and absolutely gorgeous inside, done in 18th Century royal French motif. Does anyone remember that vessel?
B&V also built Type 7C and Type 9 U-boats for the Kreigsmarine by the score. Between the Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz, plus all the U-boats, plus the seaplanes, B&V alone might have defeated the English convoy system and forced England to sue for peace (or at least an armistice), had not the Japanese blindsided Hitler by bombing Pearl Harbor. Scary thought.
The Tirpitz is often listed as........ The Tirpitz is often listed as the Bismarck's "sister ship," whatever that means. Does anyone know if B&V also built the Tirpitz? And were the two ships identical, or nearly so?
Hi, You might find this is it. shipstamps.co.uk • View topic - LA BELLE SIMONE yacht Built quite some way from B and V.
You've forgotten the GRILLE, one of the most beautiful Yachts in the History, built by B&V in 1935 and served as a Germany state yacht untill 1945.
State Yacht Grille Also Grille was the official State Yacht of Germany at that time, it was an unblemished warship. Her geared steam turbines with a combined power of 26.400 HP pushed her to 26 Kts. The armament concisted of three 10 inch guns, 4 x 3.7 cm AAA guns plus 4 x 2 cm AAA guns, not including several heavy machine guns. Additionally, the ship was capable of minelaying with 280 mines in onboard storage. With the simple addition of some torpedo tubes, Grille would have been a powerfull destroyer. During WW II, the ship served as a minelayer and flagship of the german navy commander in Narvik. Grille was scraped 1951 in the USA.
Historic BLOHM + VOSS yacht "Savarona" has been relaunched after going through a refit period that commenced back in September 2023.
