I'm looking at a mid-90's Ocean 48 SS with 6V-92 DDEC 625 hp's. My Detroit mechanic tells me he can't get the rebuild kits for 6V-92 DDEC's if I blow an engine. This boat claims to have had the engines recently rebuilt, so either my mechanic does not have access to the seller's mechanic's resources, or something else is going on. Also, any honest feedback on these engines from anyone who has owned or run them would be appreciated. I have 671 TI's with over 3500 hours, and they have been phenomenally reliable. Any information would be helpful.

Those 6v92 / DDECs are a very poor choice these days.
    Your tech is correct.
This 6V92TIB (625hp) has special pistons.
They were probably re-used for the recent rebuild.

There are NOT any MTU/DDC piston/liner kits.
The after market piston/liner kits suck.

MTU offers zero support on the DDEC equipment.
Sturdy Corp (the last DDEC repair shop) has already announced there reduction spares and service on this DDEC equipment.
e-bay will be your repair path for any DDEC spares.

Is the boat exactly what you want?
    Long term keeper?
    Lots of use planned?
Then plan on a re-power soon.

92s are different beasts from the 71s. Hard to compare them.

    71s rule.

That's very helpful information: thank you. The 48 Ocean with 6V-92 DDEC's is a really nice setup, but I can't buy a bot with limited engine parts availability. I'm trying to stick with Detroits, because the repairs are orders of magnitude cheaper than any of the high performance diesels (MANs, CATs, etc.). I also found a 53 Ocean SS with 8V92 mechanicals, and my mechanic seemed to have no problem with any parts availability for the mechanical Detroits, so I may pursue that one instead. Do you have any insights regarding the 8V92 mechanicals?

There's no shortage of parts for mechanical 92 series engines. I rebuilt one last winter and plan to do the other one early next year. I don't know how much longer these parts will be available but for now they are easy to find.

Was that a DDEC 6V92TIB you rebuilt?

These are not the normal 92.

No they are not. Repairs on Detroits are just as expensive and finding parts is even harder. I had to jump through a bunch of hoops to find the correct coolant pump for a series 60. MANs have been very good on every yacht I've managed.

    No, it's a 6v92TA.

Yep, different beast from the 625hp model.

Yes, no comparison. The only reason I mentioned this was because he asked about the 8v 92 mechanical engines.

Oh, just found my spec sheet on those 625hp models (605 shaft hp).
Correct acronym is 6V92TIA. Turbo, Inter-cooled, After-cooled with a bypass blower.
The turbo on these things is near larger than a VW Bug.
The heat-exchanger for the after-cooler is near Mark 34 torpedo sized.
The DDEC injectors are near the size of a GAU-8 gun.

Ah, I missed reading about the other boat with 8V92s (post #3).
Yes, DDC parts are available yet still very expensive.
Then you still have DDC wet liners.

If only you could find a 12V71T* or MAN powered boat.

The other problem with these engines is parts and service for the DDEC components. Even if you get lucky and find parts like pistons and liners, good luck when you need components for the electronic controls and engine management. Sturdy Corp hasn't made parts for a number of years. You might find what you need on Ebay but that's a crap shoot. And then there is the issue of finding someone to work on these systems. This was a big reason I took out my 12v92 DDEC engines.
