I am really curious if they designed it so that it can be diesel powered if needed later on. I suppose the ballast tanks could be converted or some of them. This is a pretty large boat to go all in on electric and makes me wonder what they will do if they get into a pickle since sailing this thing wouldn’t appear to be able to be done without electricity for the hydraulics.

I suppose the worst case for them on a crossing would be no wind and overcast which I feel don’t go hand in hand.

Edit: found some links with discussion on the build and proposed power sources and providers. Unsure how the thermal will generate 50kw an hour but seems like they will primarily rely on needing to sail, and sail quickly, to recharge the batteries.

My post was before I read that full article. I think they said a 400nm range which is 50 hours at 8 knots. Not sure if that includes hotel loads or not. I suppose it would be unlikely not to have wind and sun but the 250kw is at 16 knots which would require a lot of wind. It’s going to be a lot less than that normally.

It sounds like the first year is going to be one big sea trial and they won’t venture further until they complete that. In cold weather, it sounds like they would need to regularly go for sails to top off the batteries.

So she has a motor & propellers.
Lots of solar and lots of batteries.
I would hope the prop spins to recharge the batteries while sailing.

From here, I would hope ability for an APU is available for emergency service.
