I like Gus also. He seems genuine. I maintain my 81 Burger RPH for the most part myself. So I know it is possible. Hope to run across him next season in the Bahamas. If he can do it I can do it. Although I doubt I could attract a Young Bikini girl nor would I want to. It would just mess up the trip.

I seem to recall from an early video that there was mention of a donation component to this scenario.

Yes, it is impressive that he single soloed that trip to Boston . However he was also wise to plan the weather window to be optimal and for the most part everything worked that needed to work. An Auto Pilot is key to that mission as well as current electronics. The advent of GPS, MFD's, Digital Radars and AIS. Along with a huge dose of youth and enthusiasm make those kind of trips possible and safer. I really enjoy watching his Channel.

To be clear; I never said it was not "really dangerous". I said it is made safer! I would personally not do a offshore trip like that willingly. However from an entertainment stand point it is interesting to watch. The same is true with Automobile Racing. The Drivers choose to put there Lives and health at risk for money and spectators pay to watch. Little difference with Gus and his exploits. I doubt he would have many viewers if he sat on the beach during every episode in perfect weather knitting at a dangerous pace.:)

Race car drivers do everything in their power to be safe, safety gear, etc. etc. There is no way you can maintain a safe watch solo, in a 72' yacht, from FL to Boston at 8 or 10 knots for days on end. He put a lot of people's lives at risk potentially. Pull up marine traffic and look at the amount of traffic between Boston and FL.

Yet solo sailors are hailed for their exploits and achievements?

Well, of course with proper manning he´d have had at least aonother competent watchkeeper, but for the choices he prabably had (no frinds and qualified unpaid hands avainleable to him for getting there) he did his best to get it done in the most responsible way. Don´t get me wrong, not suggesting that single-handing such a nonstop passage is a good idea! Too exhausing, no second person to do watchkeeping. I even won´t do it on 50 mile passages without having someone at the helm while I do my hourly routine engine room check.

I have no respect for the solo sailors: Ego trips with improper watch keeping.
Don’t care if they kill themselves but they are also endangering other boaters while sleeping underway with the auto pilot steering.
Here is one of them, Dodge Morgan:
