The cost of attending FLIBS is continuing to go up while attendance continues to go down. This consumer shake down is only serving to hurt marine vendors who display at the show. Wednesday Preview Ticket — $70 per person. Adult 2-Day Preview + General Admission Ticket — $100 per person, valid for two days Wednesday through Sunday. Adult 2-Day General Admission Ticket — $77 per person, valid for two days Thursday through Sunday. Adult 1-Day General Admission Ticket — $46 per person, valid for one day Thursday through Sunday.
$50 for the privilege of potentially spending money at vendors who already paid to be there,,? Me thinks they've lost their greedy minds.
Non buyers today; may be dreamers. When the dreamers have the funds, they will buy. Alienate them now, and you loose a market. Motor campers are free (or much cheaper) to look at.
Informa tries even harder to keep non buyers and dreamers out of the Monaco Yacht Show than the FLIBS. Here are the 2025 ticket prizes: 1-day pass: EUR 725/ca. USD 850 2-day pass: EUR 1230/ca. USD 1440 3-day pass: EUR 1950/ca. USD 2280
It costs vendors more money to attend these shows then the cost of the actual display space, which is VERY expensive. There's the cost of shipping show displays, airline tickets, car rentals, hotel rooms, etc. And your hotel room isn't just for the 5 days of FLIBS, you need to be there for a few days before the show and a couple of days following the show for move in / move out. Now you have to man (or woman) that booth every day for 5 days. These shows are a lot of work for vendors and thanks to Informa, our marine industry friends are getting far less exposure to interested consumers, both current and future. There's a much, much bigger boat show going on every day at various boating websites but our industry is so steep in tradition that it can't see past the pages of a magazine. The automotive and aviation sectors figured this out years ago but the yachting industry is still stuck at 13 knots.
Even as a captain, I haven’t been to either Miami or FLL BS in close to 20 years. No need to as everything is available online.
Thanks for that reminder. Daughters yacht broker buddy will provide me 2 free ones for Preview Day. After getting screwed $100.00 to park near the Palm Bch show I was done with them all but will probably give this one a shot as I enjoy some of the displays.
Be careful what you suggest, it might get you a one-way ticket to the exit door. To further reduce exposure for marine industry vendors, FLIBS is not accepting applications for Influencers. Informa knows the internet is killing attendance but it's too late now, most of the pretend-to-be media kids with a YT channel already learned that covering the show doesn't produce enough revenue to cover the cost of admission. We figured this out 15 years ago so I stopped doing live show coverage. The "view" meter runs during the show and stops immediately following the show. There is no long term value for the content. Instead, we compose news pieces on PRs being generated leading up to the show and publish them prior to show opening to help drive traffic to boat builder booths. The only reason I go to FLIBS or PIBS is in sympathy of industry friends who have to work the show.
Influencer or observer with a camera, then sharing something of interest noticed during the show and wants to chat about it? Please delete my post(s) if it seems distracting from the thread.
You make a good point, Ralph. Everyone has a smart phone. I don't think the Informa Police will be using ICE tactics but chasing away people that could give marine vendors more exposure for their dollar is going in the wrong direction. This show is for the marine industry to display their wares to people who have an interest, no matter if that interest is past, present or future. In person or virtual. Instead, Informa is sending the message "if you can't afford the admission, you can't afford the product". Short of weeding out the credit questionable, they are undermining the very thing the show is intended for... to give boat builders and marine manufactures as much exposure as possible. Let's face it, attendance has been down for years, now add in economic and political uncertainty, logistics of multiple venues, FTL traffic, pricey parking, waiting on shuttles, etc, and it's easy to see why online resources have exploded.
Influencers? Like that annoying blonde with the nautical outfits? Doubt her videos will help sell anything… “economic and political uncertainties”? Do mean like a booming stock market, dropping energy prices and rising salaries?
I should have more carefully worded that statement. Interest rates are more likely the reason for uncertainty but to that effect, the cost of new boats is also a contributing factor in reduced show attendance.
Here in the US, Grocery prices and inflation in general have stabilized. Especially eggs. As to interest rates which indeed have an impact on the boat market, hopefully this will change soon as well once the feds get its act together
I wish there was some kind of special YF Boat Shows. Not just an ad from a sales shop. More than just a boat test or review. But a what's new forum that the mfgs and reps want to show off. Other than new/used sales/brokerage, all I wanted to see was new gizmos, engines and do-dads when I went to the shows. I remember at the Jax boat show when VP released the first DP lower unit based on the 280 drive. I knew that was going to be a tech marvel. The following year the 290DP. I purchased the 290DP display drive after it's second show showing. So maybe not whole boat sales but a start into a YF tech boat show is interesting? I'm not sure why you are not selling into this niche? Marine Mfg Tech Forum... The mfg's could get some interesting feedback on a parallel system from us members.
I enjoy going to both FLIBS and PIBS, as and industry professional, the networking and seeking out new products and information first hand is invaluable. At many shows I have a list of products or boats I want to see in person, or talk with the reps and get a first hand run down of the product. I see many old friends and colleagues at the shows, which helps us all reconnect. I agree all the info is available online, and the video info of potential boats is outstanding, but there is nothing like getting aboard and getting the feel of the quality, space and layouts. The digital world can only do so much. It is a shame the prices have gone up so much, but on the other hand this might keep out the stroller crowd and general public making the experience a bit more enjoyable. I for one hope they don't go away, I haven't missed a FLIBS and probably 30 years! I just wish they would bring back the National Party (rumour has it they might) and the Luerssen party, those were so epic times!
During last months WMO (White Marlin Open) the richest SF tournament in the world, a novel thought being discussed with some heavy hitters in the sportfish industry, an AI generated boat show, with cutting costs to the exhibitors being a main focus, also it could weed out the tire kickers and determine those demo ride worthy and ready to purchase a battlewagon. I am actually looking forward to such if/when it does become a reality
