Advice needed purchasing 1990 Tiara 3300 Open with Cummins 6bta.
Hi everyone, I took a look at a 1990 Tiara 3300 Open with Cummins 6BTA engines today. It has been out of the water since 2019, it worked completely fine when put away but the owner passed away. I was looking to buy a boat, put some tlc into it and resell or keep it. I was wondering if there's anything I should specifically look into regarding this particular boat and what it would be worth as is, how much would need to go into it, and then what it could possibly be sold for. Here are some pictures, would not let me upload the interior walkthrough but the interior is in good condition. Thank you guys so much.

6BTAs are good engines but may need some serious work if they ve been sitting for 5 years. The whole boat is going to need a ton of work… all pumps, air cons, heads… you won’t know what will need to be rebuilt until the boat is in the water and every system tried.

Now if you can do a lot of the work yourself, it may work out but if you have to pay $100-150 an hour… forget it.

now, that picture showing the fuel tank… is that white box the generator? If so…. Run!!!

Yes, we also have a Whaler with 6BTA from a similar year and they have been good for us. What is wrong with the generator? Just wondering, I don't really know much about marine generators. How much do you think this boat is worth as is?

Well you have a couple of inches between the gen and the tank!! And no space to drop in thru the hatch.

any maintenance on the gen will cost you four times as much.

Tiara builds a solid boat. The MC registration would indicate it's a fresh water boat. It will likely clean up nicely but heed Pascal's advice. This is a 34 year old boat.

Also, please read our rules on image sizes and hotlinking. These pics will be removed because the host can change the image. You can re-upload the images as attachments, but don't hotlink.

Thanks, sorry about the images, I will try to fix those. What do you think this boat is worth and what I should offer on this boat?
    Thanks

You need to search yacht world and other sites to see what an average diesel powered Tiara of that size and vintage will fetch.

the problem is that until the boat is cleaned and launched, nobody will know what it will take to get it in running condition I d guess at least $20/30k if you re lucky and the gen / engines / gears dont need full rebuild. If they do you could be looking at $60k, $70k or more.

If it was operational, it's $40k to $50k boat. Without knowing if the engines, genny, running gear and electronics are operational, you could easily spend that amount (or more) to restore it. Get a local marine mechanic or preferably a surveyor to supply estimates then submit these figures to the seller along with an offer based on how much you will potentially need to spend to make the boat operational.

It is worth as much as somebody is willing to pay for it.

A 34 year old boat not run in 5 years.
If the trailer hubs are any good, I'll come and remove it for them.
Ya know the tires are shot.
    Start from there.

From there, if you really need a value, You call in a surveyor AND a Cummins tech with fresh batteries.
Maybe not to get it running (YET) but let you know a valve is not stuck or a sized piston.

Those are great ole engines but if you don't know about them, your a danger to them.
It is not a Chevy 350.

    Anything rubber is probably toast.

Looks like an OhNo gen-set, half of it could be toast, the rest a gamble.

Your picturs are nice for dreamers. Most of us here have already overspent (several fold) on lil project boats.
I could be rich and famous now if I did not get into boating. Now I'm just another infamous boater still working on my 46 year old (lil project) boat.

Can you mention the asking price?

They did not mention a price, the owner died a few years ago and they run a charter fishing service that is now the family’s and I called and asked if any of his boats would be for sale since he had a lot of them. What do you think I should offer?

Offer to take it away (If you have a real truck).
That it self would be some bux,

With nothing running and no survey, You can't get it insured so even dragging it away is a tall risk.

Why run due to the Genset? My 6.5 Kohler was in the same location on a later model 3100 and performed flawlessly. Full ventilation, fuel cut-offs, sensors, etc. Seem like there are far bigger concerns here than that little unit!

impeller, belt, oil filter, secondary, The fuel valves are against the sound shield!

Sorry, man, but OG here or not, your attitude and response are BOTH insulting. Is that what this site is about??? I asked a simple question becuase I have (had) a nearly identical set-up. I did all the service myself, replaced the starter, carb, fuel pump (with the help of a service guy), and nothing was THAT difficult to manage. Perhaps the bigger question is, what boat did YOU have this unit installed on AND in this manner that makes you this expert?

    Thank you.

Maybe your setup has a little more room around the genny and offers reasonable access. The picture posted shows a serious access issue. Nothing insulting and no attitude….i didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.

whenever I have looked at a boat to purchase, access to various system is at the top of my list. That picture alone so enough to make me not even consider that boat, even if in mint condition.

i guess your reaction explains why builders get away with building such boats. It s a shame because tiaras are pretty good.

darn. Could not find the snowflake emoticon.

    Harwood,

Pascal has made over 8000 informative and educational posts. He speaks from experience and in this case, he pointed out a concern; the generator housing is butted up to the fuel tank.

BTW, engine room access is notoriously terrible on Tiaras.

It’s a 33’ boat. There’s only so many places to put a generator. The worst place on a small boat is between the motors in my opinion.

I’ve dealt with many generators centerline in the cockpit between fuel tanks. All the panels come of with quick access to everything. Only the corners of the frame remain in place. You have to work mostly from the top down. It’s a non issue really.

Here is THE quote from your OG, Pascal:
I ll ask again: how. Do. You. Get. In. That. Hole. To. Work. On. It.
On what planet is this language not intended to convey talking to idiots or people what just cannot listen or have a clue? As insulting as that comment was, it's worse that you ignore this as an Admin. Oh, well. For the record, I am a retired Mechanical Engineer, I HAD this arrangement, and I OWN and HAVE Owned Tiara Yachts, with all of their Crappy engine access. I am not even the 'guy' here, just hate to see little guys and new guys potentially get scared away by know-it-alls who clearly in this case - cannot step up and say they have maintained a unit like this.

His Snowflake Comment? That comment ALONE demonstrates the lack of integrity and intellect for BOTH of you.
