I need to replace a Sears Kenmore side by side on 1988 Viking 48C. Is it best to remove rear window or go through the sliding door? The door measurement seems to close. Or is it best to put new compressor, etc rebuild the existing one in the salon. Pros & Cons to both ways would be greatly appreciated.

    Handy toothplumber wants to know.

I wouldn't put a new compressor as the fridge is 22 years old and the coils will eventually go and that's unfixable.

As to the sliding door or rear window, it sounds like taking the sliding door off the track might be the easiest route, and less apt to damage gelcoat and furnishings as it doesn't have to be lifted so high.

Thanks for reply CaptJ, I talked to Viking yacht center this morning and since all furniture and carpet is out after major overhaul they felt it would be easier to R & R fridge thru the window.

How would the fit be thru the door if you pulled the doors off of the fridge? Very easy to do. Take the hinges off as well and you removed 3-4" of depth.

I second removing the fridge doors and hinges. Had to do the same thing on an old boat I owned.

Measure the opening and shop around online. That’s what I do whenever we need to replace an appliance. And don’t forget that fridge doors can usually easily be removed

Finally got our new laundry machines in. A skinny 1/4 inch total clearance thru the saloon door (saloon door removed).
I must have measured that hundreds of times but was still nervous till they passed thru.
Not enough room for a moving blanket or even a strap to the moving carriage. All hand carried in and down.
    Paid those kids well.

Our fridge went thru the hard top when that was replaced,,, again.

We replace ours in our 89 45SF last summer. Found a Frigidaire 13.9 cu ft that was darn close to the same dimensions. Got it in the boat through the rear sliding door after removing the doors. Found it was a little short so built a pedestal to correct and its been doing great. Hope this is helpful. Mike
