    Is this a good engine?

I have owned boats with Yanmars, Perkins and Westerbeke diesels, but never a Cummins, never heard of the 450 Diamond Series, but now eyeballing another Bahamas Cruiser with this single 450.

The big hitters for me would be quality, easy service, easy parts availability and all over user-friendly.

The boat is an Albin 35TE, never been on one before but it looks good so far…(pictures only:cool:)

I believe that is the big 8.3L / straight 6 engine.
I managed a boat that had twin 650s and ran perfect.
    I luv that engine.
@450hp, it should last near forever.
Survey it well. If it was taken care of, you will like it very much.

    Thx, good news.
The bad news is that the boat is in Cambridge, Maryland, but summer is almost here, easy delivery if I go ahead..

When you go to pick it up, tell her your over here visiting and were running a boat up the river a few days.
Your dock ready to receive the new boat?

Nah, don’t have no dock for it yet, my boat house is limited to 32’ + engines for an outboard powered rig. The Albin 35 is probably 37-38’ with the swim platform and the bow anchor, size does matter..o_O
Plenty docks will be for sale soon at my marina, but not sure I want to drop $75k for a slip, 2 nearby marinas and also residential docks for rent in Palm Coast and Flagler Beach.

The bigger issue is: Do I really want to get another boat…?
Been stepping down so as to enjoy a long and lazy retirement, this boat may however throw
    Sand in the above machinery.

Good news the on 450 Diamond being a great engine, that was step 1, wouldn’t go any further
    If it was not.
Step 2 is more pictures and (hopefully) detailed maintenance records, then more pictures, then a trip North for a buyer’s inspection, then and only IMG_7483.jpeg then, a good survey with a haul out and a sea-trial.
The seller said it has a bow thruster, but I don’t see it..

It has a thruster. Black hull, thruster hole in the shade.

Actually, That is close to what I'll be looking for soon.
Was dreaming of that design just for us, big North Atlantic reverse windshield and diesel outboards.

Yup, see it now, you have good eyes..

Diesel outboards, do they have heat exchangers?
Never seen one in the wild, expensive motors..

We had Diamond Series 450s, aka 430s, aka 6CTA8.3. (These were eventually superseded by the current electronic common-rail -- and higher horsepower -- Quantum Series.)

Mechanical engines, inline 6, turbos, 8.3L displacement. I liked them well enough. Easy to service. Only a couple extra "critical" periodic service points: scheduled aftercooler and heat exchanger service every X years... and the period depends somewhat on your water area. The normal maintenance regime -- oil and coolant changes, filter changes, etc., is pretty straightforward.

Assuming good maintenance records, should be good.

Agree with all recommendations. Have owned a boat with 6CTA motors for 15 years and they have never let me down. I had a friend with Sherwood pumps (OEM) on his Cummins and they failed at the shaft twice. I replaced mine with SMX and like the engine they have not let me down.

These are great engines. Look at the color of the paint on the tube leading to the aftercooler. The harder they were run the darker the paint. Tan is great. Dark brown/burnt they are/were overpropped.

If you buy the boat in Cambridge you should plan on cruising the Bay for a couple of weeks.

    Good news again, thanks Gentlemen.

I don’t know where this is going, depends on a few issues like engine access on this model boat:
Previous boat was an Albin 28TE with the 300 hp high speed turbo Yanmar, it was shoehorned in the boat causing service points to be almost inaccessible, 6 pencil zincs had to be changed every 9 months, half of them invisible and almost impossible to reach, the impeller could not be replaced, the whole pump had to be removed and would start leaking saltwater after 140-150 hours.
Finally got burned out of crawling around on my belly feeling for invisible bits and pieces.
Got a brand new 23’ center console for my retirement boat, but miss my numerous cruises to The Keys and The Bahamas.
The owners of the above 35TE promised send pictures and maintenance records soon.
Also considering chartering boats in the Bahamas, probably cheaper..

I comment often on those sheetwood pumps and their poor install design.
Not to happy with the QSC lift pump location either.

Still a real great engine despite some short sighted marine conversion issues.

Engine access will be important. Service points and zincs are on the sides.

Yup, waiting to see more pictures and hopefully a real Albin 35TE in person: I want to fall in love again, but it gets harder as one gets older, too picky I guess.:p

Freaking doctor appointments, friends, family passing, wife broke her arm,, weather,, anything else that could possibly happen to delay these simple (simple just a few weeks ago) lil issues are now endless.
Not a problem JUST last year or maybe last year, or maybe the year before....

Neighbors dawg dumping in my yard has now become an issue..I luv that ole puppy, having issues with the neighbor. Where does he think the dawg dumps ?? Oh, does he think??

"My brother from another mother" Has a **** built house that can not accept a real cute boat.

Sounds like a bad day, or two.
Dogs do take a dump, nothing personal Capt. Ralph.:D

Yes, picky as far as boats, cars, girlfriends (if I had a choice, good thing mama don’t read this
    Forum:))
To get a new boat, or not get a new boat..Decisions, decisions.
It is always exciting, but lots of work, even on brand new tubs.

Good news on the Cummins 450 Diamond engine, I need a strong, reliable and dependable power plant on my old days..

Oh, It is not personal, Just when you let an ole dawg out at 0600 to go unsupervised, He is going to go somewhere. How bout checking up on this during the day ahead.
And I do luv that ole puppy, Just another thing getting on my old nerves.

Yes, That 450 is a good engine.
Just like my 12Vs are good engines.
Both require time and patience during service. And need to be run and used.
I'm just bitchin cause I'm not able to use mine as I wanted this spring (or last spring).

Brother, You get another boat, I need to read about all kinds of travels or I will bomb you with soggy macaroni..

    Yeah, maybe, maybe not..
Lusting for a few more years of Bahamas cruising, but on the other hand, been there, done that.
Don’t want to do something I may kick my own arse for doing.
    Stay tuned.

Surprised Pascal hasn't chimed in; he repowered his Hatt with re-man 6CTAs...

Is the 35TE a single screw?

Aftercooler zincs (2) are on the port side. Heat exchanger zinc (1) is on the starboard side. All relatively easy to get to if you can access both sides of the engine, as in a single.... or a beamy twin.

Impeller change on a original Sherwood pump can be relatively easy. Single bolt up the center of the bore will back the impeller out. (Dunno if that's the same for an SMX replacement pump.) I used an "impeller tool" (maybe still available online) to stuff the new one in, piece o' cake. The original pump/impeller is keyed; I've read the SMX version is splined... which I would guess makes it slightly easier.

Oil, fuel, and coolant filter changes, easy. Oil change also easy with a pump system; dunno what it'd be like without a pump.
