Cummins 450 Diamond Series….?

I believe that is the big 8.3L / straight 6 engine.
I managed a boat that had twin 650s and ran perfect.
I luv that engine.
@450hp, it should last near forever.
Survey it well. If it was taken care of, you will like it very much.

It has a thruster. Black hull, thruster hole in the shade.

Actually, That is close to what I'll be looking for soon.
Was dreaming of that design just for us, big North Atlantic reverse windshield and diesel outboards.

We had Diamond Series 450s, aka 430s, aka 6CTA8.3. (These were eventually superseded by the current electronic common-rail -- and higher horsepower -- Quantum Series.)

Mechanical engines, inline 6, turbos, 8.3L displacement. I liked them well enough. Easy to service. Only a couple extra "critical" periodic service points: scheduled aftercooler and heat exchanger service every X years... and the period depends somewhat on your water area. The normal maintenance regime -- oil and coolant changes, filter changes, etc., is pretty straightforward.

Assuming good maintenance records, should be good.

Agree with all recommendations. Have owned a boat with 6CTA motors for 15 years and they have never let me down. I had a friend with Sherwood pumps (OEM) on his Cummins and they failed at the shaft twice. I replaced mine with SMX and like the engine they have not let me down.

These are great engines. Look at the color of the paint on the tube leading to the aftercooler. The harder they were run the darker the paint. Tan is great. Dark brown/burnt they are/were overpropped.

If you buy the boat in Cambridge you should plan on cruising the Bay for a couple of weeks.

I comment often on those sheetwood pumps and their poor install design.
Not to happy with the QSC lift pump location either.

Still a real great engine despite some short sighted marine conversion issues.

Engine access will be important. Service points and zincs are on the sides.

Freaking doctor appointments, friends, family passing, wife broke her arm,, weather,, anything else that could possibly happen to delay these simple (simple just a few weeks ago) lil issues are now endless.

Yes, That 450 is a good engine.
Just like my 12Vs are good engines.
Both require time and patience during service. And need to be run and used.
I'm just bitchin cause I'm not able to use mine as I wanted this spring (or last spring).

Is the 35TE a single screw?

Aftercooler zincs (2) are on the port side. Heat exchanger zinc (1) is on the starboard side. All relatively easy to get to if you can access both sides of the engine, as in a single.... or a beamy twin.

Impeller change on a original Sherwood pump can be relatively easy. Single bolt up the center of the bore will back the impeller out. (Dunno if that's the same for an SMX replacement pump.) I used an "impeller tool" (maybe still available online) to stuff the new one in, piece o' cake. The original pump/impeller is keyed; I've read the SMX version is splined... which I would guess makes it slightly easier.

Oil, fuel, and coolant filter changes, easy. Oil change also easy with a pump system; dunno what it'd be like without a pump.
