3176 cat

Easily said, there are more better engines than worse engines than the 3176B engine.

Notable oil slinger.
For a 10L rig, IMO, it was just a fair engine.

If your looking at that 42 dock queen in Mt Pleasant, It could be a good package considering 450HP Volvos push the later 42s very well.
There are no DIY adjustments on the racks. All special Cat tools.
Why are there 80 hours difference on the engines?

The short lived 3176C eliminated the coolant and oil leaking spacer. What a kluge cylinder assembly.
The C10 came out earlier than that. Hence why I feel these were two different families.
Of course, I am not a Cat guy, I could be wrong here.

IMO, it is the lack of luv that allows Detroits to leak oil in a boat.
It took a few years but the only oil leaks my 12V71TIs have is from the mechanical tach drives.
One (two maybe) drop(s) of oil from 12-16 hours of running. 15 years later, still not worth messing with.

it has the 3176 cats. owner bought a bigger boat so I'm told. as far as hrs there is 120 hrs difference. I would guess early on they had an after cooler that was usually 120 -200 hrs on the engines. I'm still trying to locate someone in that area to survey the engines any ideas? Can't get Blanchard to pick up the phone. and when the receptionist does and transfers yo its crickets and no return call after several messages.

Bottom line, early 3176? Not 3176B? Then walk on.

I sold a 61 Queenship twice that was powered with 3176B's. She was operated at slower speeds mostly, 1500-1650. At 5000 hours we had Pantropic do a 1000 hour service and they reported that the after coolers had been leaking. They rebuilt them for free and the owner paid for the cyl kits. That free rebuild offer from Cat did not last long when a thousand motors died an early death from aftercoolers.
Our experience with that pair of 76B's was very good. 2,500 hours since the rebuilds now.
