salon lights

    so, this is a pretty stupid question but.... I have ceiling salon lights out that need bulbs replaced. I have tried prying them down off the ceiling with no luck... no way to get to them otherwise.. am I missing something??!! 2003 52 C

    I sometimes use 2 butter knives to pry them down. I slide 1 on each side of the fixture and gently work it down.
    Replace the bulbs with LED's. Cuts the heat down.

    Mine actually has a retainer ring that needed popped out first, but I have an older boat. Definitely replace with LED's cut's down on heat and power.

    They appear different than mine. Mine are held in with pressure clips that expand out from the fixture.
    You should call Viking in NJ. Give them the hull ID and see what they say.
    They seemed to retain a great deal of info on the boats they build

    took your advice and contacted viking.. didn't want to screw up headliner... they got back to me early next morning with great instructions and a picture!! Will take your advice on the led's, as the previous owner had already changed all the cockpit and flybridge over.... thanks!!

    was researching solan lights on a 2001 convertible. I am trying to figure out how to get mine out without damaging anything. I want to replace them with led as they make a ton of heat, can you send some pics of the lights thanks

    I am assuming you have a Viking. On mine it was basically friction that held them in. Carefully get a blade or screw driver between the light and the headliner and work it down a 1/4 inch or so and then get your hand around the light and turn it back and forth while pulling down. I don’t know if we have the same situation but that was the way mine were. Do you have the bulb that looked like a small cylinder with 2 prongs? I believe halogen and yes they would get hot as hell quick. I switched mind to LED and was glad I did.

    yes a 2001 viking convertible, I will try to find some pics of the light face, it almost looks like the glass cover has slots that will allow that to come out to change the bulb. Every time I have messed with it, it seems to take so much force and I have been worried about breaking the tab or glass (plastic) cover etc. Thanks for the reply

    Had the same on mine (not a Viking) it got stuck to the leather of the headliner real good, was also afraid to use force. Used tools intended for car trim, worked a treat and didn't cost much.

    Replaced the G4 halogens for LED - worked super and went from 400 Watt to 35 or so, also it cut the heat. However, be aware I had to replace the transformers and dimmers as the LED need the ballast. Otherwise the LED may blink and/or make annoying noises....

    Bertram used all 24 volt "heat lamps." Found 24 v. LED's on Amazon in a couple different shades of white that simply plugged in the 2 pin sockets. Two circuits that had dimmer switches would never turn off with all LED's so I had to leave one quartz in each of them.

    I am working on the same thing in a 06 Viking, hearing a lot of mixed things about what all has to be changed/replaced in order to go to all LED bulbs. Some are saying replace ballasts, others are saying to bypass ballasts as the LEDs don’t need them. If you have any input I would sure appreciate the help

    I ve been using these and they re pretty good. They re 12-24 VDC and VAC. Last a while. Warm white which is so much better.

    I have about 30 on my personal 53 and over 200 on the 110 I run. They we re all halogen when I got on the boat!

    Same ones I've been using on 24 v. Only one out of about 3 dozen developed a flickering so replaced it. Two of the circuits have several on dimmers and those would not 100% turn off unless I left one of the old halogen's in.

    I removed the transformers and installed drivers on a few Hatterass's. Lots of weight on a Hatt 80.
    A bit of work but soo cool.

    Some lights can go multi color.

    The kids at DRSA helped so much specking the drivers. Did not have to over purchase on drivers.
    Dimmers work like a champ.

    DRSA has a lot of good quality fixtures.

    many dimmers have issues when you switch to LEds as they don’t draw enough. Leaving one halogen indeed can helps.

    most of the 110 I converted uses Lutron and overall it works pretty good with LEDs. A couple of rooms and heads used Vimar and that was a problem with LEDs. Adding one halogen in the control box made it work but eventually i just ripped the dimmers and installed normal switches. Nobody could figure out how to use the dimmers any way
