    Hello!

About a handful of us located into Florida have been looking to get into bigger boats and have a shared liveaboard/Airbnb, with maybe a couple of trips to the Bahamas and what not a year together.

We have our eyes on a 1970 Burger Flush deck orginally 67ft, now about 74.5ft, "Kamelot" or originally named "Garbo" (owned by Greta Garbo).

    https://www.**************/yacht/1970-burger-74-flush-deck-motoryacht-8788171/

We are drawn to it's history, and with a good survey, costs to finish some things, along with the understanding of maintenance to the hull we hope to hang onto it for some time.

Interior wise how it looks from the photos would be easy for us. Engine wise collectively we have experience. My main concern would be with the aluminum hull. The boats I have owned were fiberglass. The company that did the extension on the boat seems reputable for how long they've been around (derektor I believe?). In my opinion that would be a spot to definitely look major damage, if any.

Also, just a thought since it looks like the floors that are missing some planks would appear to be where the engine hatches are? Am I correct? Would I be safe to assume they were opened for some sort of work that needs finishing?

Hopefully someone here has been on this Burger, or could give some advice on it. Could someone reference a good surveyor in the Bridgeport Connecticut area with experience on these boats?

Somewhat of the plan would be to get the boat seaworthy up there and have it delivered down to Jacksonville temporarily to finish things manageable for us, eventually taking it to the Port Canaveral area.

Thanks in advance! Im looking forward to learning some more about this boat and older burgers in general

What are the warning stickers on the hull about? Didn't see mention of those in the text anywhere. (I didn't try to enlarge and read...)

Those look like US Marshal stickers to me.
This boat is definitely a project, as the price reflects. My guess is that the price reflects that you would need to put multiples of the purchase price into the boat. I'd suggest giving Chris Daves a call, and ask him for his best guess as to what it really needs. If that doesn't scare you away, grab a cheap flight up to look for yourself before investing any real $ into hiring a surveyor.
The state of the engines, plumbing, and wiring would be of greater concern than the aluminum. But if you do go up to look for yourself, spend some time looking in at any hull plate/frames you can access, and look into the hard-to-see areas for signs of corrosion (look for white powder or a gooey gel).

Thought so, too. Implies potential additional encumbrances? Just something else to check...

I have been a part of two (75' & 58') US Marshal's purchases; NO problems.
One a bank repo, the other crime collection.

If I am understanding things correctly this will be joint venture amongst more than 2 people. In theory this can work but in reality I think the chance of success (being defined as 80% of the owners are happy with the arraignment after a year or more) is slim at best. I foresee lots of disagreement on how the money is spent on the restoration, management of the boat post restoration, etc. I get it, in a perfect world it makes sense to spread the cost of the boat over a few owners since most of us don’t use our boats nearly as much as we want seeing them sitting in their slips empty more than they are out cruising or being lived aboard. Also I think the airbnb concept doesn’t work well with boats. Much too complicated for the average homeowner to deal with. I love old burgers and have no comments on the boat but the concept to me has a slim chance of working regardless of the boat chosen.

Shared ownership of a boat...hmmm....I was once told by someone far more intelligent than I am....partnerships are for lonely people. Best to avoid them.

That being said, the Sparkman Burger is a terrific layout, and the cockpit will add to the range and upgrade the ride. Don't think the path will be cheap, and don't rely on partners to participate nicely. But she's a beautiful boat as a project. I suggested to Burger a few years ago that they should be out there rehabbing their own as newish.

Resto-mod ratrod Burgers from yesteryear. They could probably get a syndication on Discovery or something. If I had to do mine over again, I very well may have taken her to them along with my plan. Outcome would be a new-ish vessel done by the yard and at a fraction of new pricing. Project would have been done in a year or 18. Mine has been ongoing for 8? Then again I get to use her during...and for most standards, she's been finished for a while.

I used to enjoy watching Huckins rebuild one of their oldies.
They still have the drawings, plans and build notes on near all hulls they ever built.

Love running across the old Huckins yachts. Saw one this week in Thunderbolt. I have a passion for the classics.

We lived on the Huckins dock for around 10 years. Nice styles but not many seemed accommodating to us.
There was only one I had an interest in. Full width master stateroom with a king sized bed.
Even made offers on Rowinco directly to the owner.
Then one day she was moved to the yard next door, sold out from under me.

Oh, Got a notice about Thunderbolt, Dock fell in at the restaurant??
Hope nobody or nothing else was hurt.

I fear the O P has disappeared . Hope he got good answers.
Wish he would come back and fill us in on what he is still thinking or doing.

Somebody will pick up "Kamelot" and bring her back to life. Just is going to require a tall cash flow.

Dock caved in at the former fish house immediately west of Thunderbolt Marina. Thunderbolt is fine. Very accommodating, and very nice stop. Had Naiad ship some bits and pieces there so that we could return to sea. Ran from Montauk to Thunderbolt without the fins...a bit of a ride at times. Outside now, approaching Ft Pierce. Caught Space X last night off your neck of the woods, 40 out.

Rowinco, yes, she used to season in Hollywood Beach. I'd come across her all of the time. Great choice in lines. She was a pretty one.

Yes, and the easiest part is the plating. Fortunately Burger was very thoughtful when they set these up in the yard, and all systems are generally easy to reach for upgrading. I found it all to be very logical aboard.

West? Can't picture anything but land to the real west of the marina. Or maybe you mean the old shrimp docks just a few blocks up the street from the marina, if walking in the general direction toward Tubby's?

We've stopped at Thunderbolt Marina several times over the years, first time northbound in 2001... nice place, nice folks. First time I ever had a Krispy Kreme donut; still high on that sugar rush.
