I found an older sportfish to buy. She has MAN V10-1100 from 1987. I have great experience with the 2 stroke DD 92TI (Johnson & Towers) and they have been incredibly reliable.

The MAN’s have had their 1000 hr service in 2021 and only a few hours operation since.

The sportfish is a good price. As you know, no one in this date can get financing on a boat older than 10 years - unless you have 50% down. The banks have all changed.

Is it worth buying a nice older SF with cash - knowing she has MAN V10-1100’s?

Is it safer to purchase a SF with CAT’s or DD’s? Thanks in advance.

Question is lacking details so can't answer. Mine is mid 90's with Man's. Purchased 12 months ago.

    Welcome to Yacht Forums

I'm a DDC nut also. Had my hands into 71 since I was young.

Been tinkering on MANs for several years now.
Changing oil, hang on repairs, deliveries.
    I luv them.
In this area, I also luv that somebody else owns them.

The greatest issue you are going to have is a MAN shop and techs.
There are no MAN techs in this area worth a ship.
The ones that do respond are lying bulls in the china shop.
Anything more than what I could do for my MAN customers, We call on a shop from south Florida to drive up miles for our MAN heavy work.

When you start running them, you will luv them also.

You need to find a good MAN shop and tech. They are going to become buds.
So, get on the docks, ask about, who works on other folks MANs. What MAN tech is good/bad.
Visit the shops. Do they want to work on boats?

Start shopping for a MAN tech soon.
Your going to need a REAL MAN tech for engine purchase survey.
Survey the engines very well. Receipts and logs from the seller are also a must.

Years ago, everybody was bad mouthing the computer junk that MAN used, but those issues seem to have been resolved.

Please do some searches on MAN engines on this site.
MAN engines have been topics on YF many times.
I don't think anybody has ever talked bad about them.

    Is this a dock queen?

    OR replacement engines?
    V10 or V12s 2 1100hp?

Keep us up on your findings.

    No way, unless repowered.
In those days, the higher power MAN V10 available was 820hp.
The 1100 is actually the higher power ever among MAN V10, equipped with common rail, but it was introduced in the mid noughties.

BTW, I forgot to mention: if you are sure that the boat was never repowered, I can see two possible alternatives.
Either the boat has 820 rather than 1100hp engines (which could well be more than enough, depending on the boat size), or
The boat actually has V12 engines (which were indeed available with a 1100hp rating), rather than V10.

Regardless, both are solid engines, and pretty straightforward to work with, requiring no electronic diagnose systems and the specific competence that this involves. So, neither would put me off, if well cared.

Oh, and just in case you have only seen "V10/1100" advertised by some broker on a 1987 boat with no mention of repower, don't forget the golden rule on what you can really trust of boat ads:
    Nothing, zero, zip, zilch, nada.

I ll take Cats 3412s or 3412Es over pretty much much anything. Bulletproof and with after coolers designed when Cat was still abalone to design hood after coolers.

Yes, the 34** family or newer Cats are great.
With good support, I would not say better.

Also, never trust a brokers ad unless you and a surveyer verify it.

The guy I used for a few things many months back went MIA so who down here in South Florida are you using ? Previous Bertram had Detroit's and the service man was driving hours down here from near Live Oak.
