The next couple days I'll be looking at the following two boats... 97 Hatteras CPMY, 3126 Cat's, 3100 hours. Modern electronics with chart plotter, radar, auto pilot, 2 VHF, sounder, etc. Photos look good but they could be 10 years old. Asking $160k. 84 Viking aft cabin, 671TI's, 465hp, 2300 hours, basic electronics, photos look good but who knows. Asking $84k My experience with 671TI's in checkered, but back then we ran them HARD commercial tuna fishing. Since these are in a aft cabin MY, I would assume that they have not been run hard, but I wouldn't put money on it. I would be running at trawler-ish speeds. What do you all think? Thanks.
Gotta look at both. The gelcoat might be shot on the Viking. Looks like it might not have seen a wash and wax in 10 years. Inside looks nice though. You wouldn't be concerned over the 465hp rating? General consensus seems to be that cranking them up that high cuts the life span down considerably. General overall condition, I think the Hatt is in better shape, but it is also 13 years newer.
The Hatt should be painted and if properly cared for it should have many years left. The Viking of gel coat must be needing a paint job. 465 hp is high for 671s, depends how they ve been run. Also, is that 2300 hours on original engines or rebuilt? What kind of rebuilt?
As far as I know at this point, they are original. Planning on putting eyes on n it Wednesday. hoping the broker will let be do a cold start. Sometimes they won't allow a start unless the owner is present.
Looked at the 97 Hatt today. Nice looking boat. A bit dated inside but that's to be expected. 3126 Cats are shoe horned in. I pity the guy that has to work on them. There is one small access hatch in the salon. I'm guessing that if you removed the carpet, more of the floor can come out. It would be impossible to any meaningful service otherwise. Tomorrow we look at a 84 Viking aft cabin. Downside is it has 671TI at 485hp with 2200 hours, never rebuilt. No idea how they were run or maintained. This is the boat mentioned above. I was either mistaken on the hours and HP or the broker updated the ad after I asked him a bunch of questions on the engines. Also found a 46 Bertram MY with 8V92N's. Original engines with 1900 hours. It's not far from the Viking so trying to get onboard tomorrow.
Ah, The baby of our 58 Bert MY. Please look this tank over. Tell us of what you think. Remember, your looking out while cruising.
Never got on board the Bertram, but found out it has also been used as a floating condo with little use. Based on photos and that info, it's off the list. What I've found with these "floating condo" boats is that everything other than what is required to keep it from sinking at the dock is badly neglected. Most of them would take more than they are worth to get them truly seaworthy.
