In search of a 50’ Post. 2000 or newer with MAN 820/860’s, CAT 3406’s or Detroit Series 60’s. I am familiar with the gelcoat issues and would prefer something from the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast.

    Also open to 53’s.

I've seen everything currently listed and a few that were off-market but nothing that was up to my standards.

Do you belong to the Post FB page ?
I do not but from what I've heard there is a big following there and when a boat goes up for sale, there is a good possibility it will show up there before the broker market

Can't help with your request, but just FYI, you're not going to find any boat with MAN 860hp engines, because MAN never built any with that rating.
Besides, the 820hp did exist, but it was their last mechanical V10, and by the early 2000s the V8 was available with an 800hp power rating.
So, since the latter was obviously lighter, most builders (not sure of Post, mind) preferred that to the V10.
Just saying - all the best for your search!

Thanks, although I looked at a 2001 50' Post that had the D2840LE401's 860 HP and I know of a 2003 that has them also. I have also seen the Post build sheets that specifically list the 860 as an option.

The D2840LE401 are precisely the last mechanical V10 produced by MAN I was referring to.
Available in parallel with the semi-electronic 1050hp D2840LE403 in its final years, before they introduced the common rail 1100hp LE423, which was the very last evolution of the V10 block, eventually phased out.
But I can assure you that any documents you might have come across referring to those engines as rated for 860hp is wrong - see attachment.
Not that it makes any meaningful difference in practice, of course!

I wonder if 820 is the prop HP and 860 is the light flywheel HP of the same engine.
Many ex-used car sales pukes (boat brokers) use the larger number HP (SAE light flywheel) when the smaller HP (shaft HP) number is more descriptive.
Any lil thing to impress a customer or sales lead.

I would for sure look over that Cat 3406E equipped boat.
    I luv that engine.

3406s are great motors but louder than the MANs. The Man 820's in the 50' post is the perfect Combo. 26-27 knot cruise at 55 gph, smooth, quiet, plenty of power........why they didn't put the 1050 HP version of that motor in there is beyond me. LOL

The 3406 boats are a few knots slower I believe but my preference would be the Series 60's if I had the choice. The 1050's were actually on the options list but none were ordered with them, the second to last 50' built had CRM900's.

I loooked a a 50' Post for sale in Destin last year that had series 60 Detroits. Both engines had pistons, liners and rings replaced at 700 hrs according to the broker. It was the cleanest used boat I've ever seen but it had the covid price increase so I walked away. The broker seemed to think it wasn't unusual to go through those engines that early but that hasn't been my experience with them. "Post Op" was the name then. Not sure who bought it but it was a beautiful boat.

That's yet another animal, and frankly one I'd steer clear of.
First of all, the D2848LE423 (as it was called) is a V8, not a V10, but that's not the reason why I wouldn't recommend it.
In fact, I've got V8s also in my boat (the previous version LE403, 800hp, 100% mechanical), and in some ways I prefer them to V10s, though the smoother and most balanced engines in MAN lineup have always been the V12, anyhow.

Trouble is, the CRM900 was the very first MAN engine that got the common rail treatment, skipping in the V8s the intermediate step of semi-electronic injection that they fitted to V10s and V12s - in other words, a bit of a guinea pig.
I'm aware of several boats powered with those engines which experienced all sort of troubles (mostly electronic), while there are many more boats around powered by pre-CRM V8s, much older and with many more hours clocked, that are widely considered very reliable - which is true also of the almost identical 820hp V10s, anyway.

Anyway, I'm attaching also the CRM900 specs sheet, for your reference.
Reliability aside, its specs are indeed impressive, superior not only to the 800hp V8, but also to the 820hp V10.

I do luv the V8-900-CRM. Long ago, we started out, light maintenance of them in the area SeaRays. We quickly had the oil filters down to "not a spilled drop".
Nobody in Jax could work on them with0ut trashing the boat and breaking more than they fixed.
Wow, what a bunch of oil leakers. Oil coolers and back case gaskets.
AND,, Fuel leaks in the valley.
Started working with the MAN shop out of Texas, who delivered and installed those engines in many of the boat lines.
Wow,, They supported our shop well.
Once all those leaks were cured,, what a great package.
The MAN heat exchanger issues were not that big of a deal compared to others IMO.
Fast, light and quiet. Sadly, in the V8 profile, was still a fat beast to work on.
Hence leaning to the Cat 3406E or MTU 60. That IMO, has the stronger crankshafts.
The later (last) MTU 60 I recall went over 14L (from around 11L) also, making that my choice over all, If only I won the Lotto...

Capt Ralph is dead-on here. The 860hp was the flywheel HP and the 820 was the real HP to the prop. I have been on several of the boats marketed as “860HP” boats but the engines were the standard MAN 820HP 10 Cyl engines that I have in my 50.

Yeah, AFAIK that was a relevant factor behind the not so great reputation eventually earned by those engines, at least on this side of the Pond.
As I said, that was the first to adopt CRM (and also 4 valves heads) in the mid noughties, when their dealers network - which BTW by then was still familiar only with mechanical engines, since MAN was the last builder to jump on the electronic control bandwagon - was still struggling to deal with the "intermediate" so-called EDC engines, i.e. the 1050/V10 and the 1300/V12.
But the bottom line is that by now it's widely regarded as a bit of a problem child, and I'd rather look for something else on a 20yo boat.
Like the previous V8/800 or the Cat 3406, which I also like a lot.
But for some reason in those days, at least among EU boatbuilder, MAN was MUCH more popular than Cat, and the only 3406 powered boat that I considered before buying mine was the Aicon 56, which I wouldn't have touched with a bargepole for several other reasons.
