    Ok i’ll double check my units pretty small it’s only for a 471. I just have the red cone filter and then the other little filter that sits on top of the Black plastic check valve which goes down to the coffee can on the side of the block.

    You can see both filters in my first or second photo.
    Then on top of the airship housing where the red cone filter meets the base there’s a spring loaded Little plastic Restriction indicator , it will pop up into the clogged position.

    I will double check it for any other filters and the Airsep papers.

    The separating (coalescing) filter I'm trying to explain about is built into that black painted can that clamps on to your turbo, not the air filters.
    This is easily idintified by the assembly using springs to hold the air filter on.
    The serviceable assembly uses a big clamp to hold everything together.
    Walker recommends the newer coalescing filters get changed out every 500 hours. I can not find any spec on how often to replace the original black can.

    Is there any advantage to upgrading the airseps? Mine are the spring variety.

    The Walker web site does not talk much about this or how long the older design is to last.

    I remember removing some off of a 12V71TA for a engine rebuild (3+ years ago). Oil poured then dripped out the the Walkers for days.
    I contacted Walker and they said it was time to replace the assemblies.
    No spec was offered on how long they were supposed to last.
    They offered a quote on the newer set up for both engines (4 units).
    End of their support.

    I'm not a dues paying member any more to BootDiesel. They did have a fair write up on upgrading AirSeps on a Cummins boat.
    I can not say why.
    If any BootDiesel subscribers out there can find that article and report back why/when it was upgraded and any other notes, That info could help us all.

    IMO, nope. Mine are 1994 or so vintage , and are like new. All parts are still around. Keep the filters clean and re-oil every year. Keep an eye on the hoses for any holes from rubbing against the engine(like mine) ,loose clamps etc. Make sure the 1/2'' drain , hose and check valve are clear and working every so often.

    Anyway, had a great day today with my new buddy ,Mr. Retired marine J & T guy. Both number one and two cylinders/rings are not in good shape. Number three and four were clean and shiny as compared to one and two. Time for an overhaul, which I figured , but wanted to be really sure. I'm not planning a major over haul, but an overhaul of the cylinder liners, pistons, rings and maybe main bearing after we remove one and look that over, they might be ok.

    I had a list of questions for him which we went over, one by one, while looking over the motor and parts first hand. He is very knowledgeable . It was a really great way for me to learn and understand. Plus he is in my lane $$ wise.
    Gent had on a ''RPM detroit diesel'' mechanic tee shirt, FYI, he said he worked there years ago too. Some of you Fla. folks know of that place.

    He is coming back in a week or two when I'm ready to pull the head and raise the engine. Fingers crossed , with his help, I think I'll get this done...properly.

    More stuff removed from the engine. I’m getting there. Only stepped on my shaft zincs twice while lifting the cast iron heat exchanger tank off the engine and out into the truck. Heavy…

    How deep are you going into the engine?
    In-Frame work just for the liner kits, I left the HE bolted on.

    Oh Wait, Your still young and strong and work does not bother you.

    My HE has to come off my stb engine for PTO re-seal. Come on down when you can.

    I had to get it loose to remove the two bolts that protrude into the head just a little bit and it’s also leaking on one side so I decided just to take the whole thing off bring it home and re-gasket and reseal every fitting on the tank and then paint it.

    Fix a leak?
    It's a Detroit. It won't run rite if it's not leaking a lil bit of something, somewhere.
    Just not rite. The moon and earth just won't line up correctly again.
    Gravity could be affected.

    I can live with Earl, but not water.
    Tank and fittings were getting ugly.

    An Earl leak or two is good . That’s Detroit sweat ! I like to know they are working hard for me!
