    Pros/cons for each?

I'm thinking changing to South Bay strainers could at least remove some of the clutter in our engine room... but then what about periodic cleaning?

Maybe different pros/cons for different purposes? External strainers OK for genset, too? Maybe better to stay with basket strainers for ACs, for more frequent cleaning? Or...?

Been using them for years, great especially for air con and water makers. Air con runs pretty much 24/7 down here so internal strainers require regular cleaning. Solved problem with south bay strainers.

I also have them on the mains on my 53 and they work very well although the main strainers usually stay clean because they don’t run as much as air cons.

going to add them to the air con and water maker on the 110 Lazzara I run at the next haul out

they re fine for generators as long as they have relief hole in back to prevent pressure from building up underway which could flood the gen. And you need to make sure your diver keep growth out of the relief hole. Personally I prefer not to have them on gens.

maintenance is limited to monthly scrubbing by the diver, just like any other thru hull.

I can't offer much of a detailed analysis but I have the SB strainers on my mains and gen. Basket strainer for AC. Never had any issues. I clean the SB strainers at haul out every season. The basket gets cleaned about as often. Of course we don't have anywhere near the growth that folks in South FL have to deal with.

    Maybe I'm missing something here.
In which way exactly SB strainers are better than basket ones, when the latter needs neither a diver nor a liftout for cleaning - a job that takes less than 5 mins, btw?
Not to mention that with basket you get an immediate view of the conditions.

I think, the thought is; saving room in tight engine rooms.
Other than that, I do not see any need to change hardware.

You still have to access the thru hull sea-cock. The strainer can always be hosed to another (better?) location IMO.

Lately we have been in fresh water, no diving service for barnacle cleaning. If I had the SB strainers, I would still need a diver to clear debris away that are always in the water.
AC systems are still in de-humidify mode when were not on board for long periods.

They are especially good for air con intake which run pretty much 24/7 down here in sofl. How often you have to clean the strainers depends on location, in some case it s once a week which means shutting down the entire system, pulling the basket, cleaning it on the dock, reinstalling and restarting. 20’ spent sweating.

on the other hand the South Bay strainers don’t require any cleaning except a quick scrub by the diver who comes once a month any way

also unlike typical slotted plastic bags can’t get stuck. Before using regular slots, at least once a year I had to get under the boat to clear a plastic bag. With the SB the bag may block flow causing the pump to shut down but it won’t get jammed.

I don't think you're missing anything. But the cleaning of the SB strainers may be less frequent for some. With basket strainers one may have to regularly pull the baskets and pick out jelly fish, sea weed, eel grass, etc. You don't have to do that with the SB strainers.

We used the type with removable perorated screens for years. Would always keep an extra set of screens and painted with anti-fouling to change out as needed when the diver is there.

Useful discussion, thanks. First round on me, if we get together.

Diver service available but not as common up here, and I've heard third-hand not even allowed in our current marina.

I routinely keep spare baskets on hand for our AC and genset strainers. Out with the old, swab out the housing, in with the new, could be as little as 5 mins or so and done. Clean the previous basket at a more leisurely pace.

But our engine strainers are relatively huge, serious engine room obstructions... and that's where I was thinking about the space saving (decluttering) possibilities. We don't seem to get much growth in the big ones, possibly because they're only really in use when we're underway and in deeper water.

    Good food for thought...
