I currently have a Gaggenau radiant cooktop - 4 burner. I've never really liked the way it works. Seems like I always have to fool around with the dials. I recently bought a new Motorhome and it has an Induction cooktop and the thing is pretty awesome. Wondering if anyone has changed out to an Induction cooktop on your boat and the pros and cons? They supposedly use less power and I like how there is no heat on the stove surface the moment you turn it off. And it gets hots like right now. What say you experts?

    Yes, yes and yes!!

Induction is the best thing that's happened in a galley since goosing the Cook at Christmas. Do it.

The glossy glass top you will never keep new clean. If you can, stay with a flat or mate finish.

    Yes, go induction!
Did it a few years ago, best change to our galley.

Ralph.. induction tops don't mark like radiant because the top doesn't get hot like a radiant.

After a while, boil overs, cooking grunge, hot splatters start leaving their trails on the smooth glass surface.
"Barkeepers Friend" seems to be a good cleaner. But if you are in luv with that glass smooth surface and cook like a mad man, keeping that clean glass gloss can be a chore.
Currently, our cook surface is a mess after dinner. Josie will shoot me if I try to get a picture rite now.

Not to argue but we have 3 of them and don't have that issue.

Get that cooktop cream cleaner, Weimans, it works amazing at keeping them clean. Baked on stuff that's really tough comes off with a good razor blade.......... Yes, Induction is amazing in it's speed.

Thanks for the input everyone, you confirmed my thinking. I'll add this to my list for this winter. Hopefully I can find something that fits in the existing location without having to modify the granite counter tops.

Wondering how induction work on generators and how they react to variations in frequency. Some electronics are sensitive to frequency, I remember issues with Fisher Paykel drawer dishwasher acting up as soon as freq would vary by just 1 Hz which is pretty common on gen

Run mine regularly on the Gen. No issues that I've encountered. I think on boats with gen's under 12kw you'll get a short Freq shift of 1-2 hz for the inrush period of a AC starting but that's it. Gen doesn't really notice the cooktop.

I found a great 4 burner unit on Amazon, going into 3rd year, no issues, more importantly, my wife likes it. And it was under $400 if I recall.

We have a 3 burner induction run from a Masse 3.5 kv .
Works fine the few times we use it @ anchor .You need a fresh set of induction pans .See the emblem on the bases .

Far from pretending to be an expert cook, but my wife and several friends are.
And according to them all, there's no replacement for gas.
With the added benefit that you don't have to run the genset at all, possibly spoiling some magically quiet anchorage.

PS: Yeah, I know the risks and all that, but...
Better get rid of the boat altogether, if you don't want any.
And at least, this is worth taking! :D

I have gas in my boats and RV, but induction at home and I think they are about equal for cooking. My induction top I clean gently once a year with a 9 micron wet sandpaper. In the boats we are producing we install induction in almost all the 54' to 80' and they can run silent from inverters...

With regard to effectiveness, each to their own, I guess.
AFAIK, most of the best cooks still prefer flame cooktops as general purpose, but I'm also aware of some "converted" to induction.
Ref. cooking without turning the genset on, depending on how many pots and how long the preparation is, you might need some helluva inverters and battery banks, I reckon!

Absolutely, we also have a problem with too short anchor chains when it is 2.000 meter depth...

Yeah, not considering gas (LP) at all. I have no other need for LP on the boat except a few of the little green cans for my BBQ. I have no interest in creating a need for something else to have to worry about running out of and fueling up. Not going to find space for a tank, plumb the lines, etc, etc. I would stick with what I have before going that route. Besides, I have to run my day gen at minimum all the time regardless other than when we go to bed.
