  1. Hey fellas, still looking at boats. I have narrowed my search to Californian, Viking or Hatterass all with double cabins 43-45' 1988 or 1989. Which is the better quality boat? Thanks!

I am a Viking owner but of that vintage hatteras. I don’t know much about Californian but based on my limited knowledge I don’t think Californian belongs in the conversation between Hatteras and Viking.

    Would agree
Viking aft cabin also has more living space than the same hatteras

With factories shut down on two of them, Viking still answers the phone and can still answer most questions.
Something I think should be considered.

Hatteras is not shut down and is building boats. You can get someone on the phone to answer questions even on a 1988 motoryacht. I wouldn't consider Californian, I delivered a 45' around 1500NM, it was an ok sea boat but slow and getting around the engine room was a bit tough, not the build quality of Hatteras and Viking. I'd say Hatteras is a touch better built than Viking then, but cannot go wrong with either of those 2 brands from that era.

Paul, C.D. and Vicky are not available anymore.
    No more prints available also.
I'd say the Hatt MY support is about gone.
To the OP, If the Hatteras turns you on, it is not a bad boat. We do enjoy working on them.
There is a non factory support and part sales for older Hatt's that is very helpful.

They all got old and retired. There are still people there to answer those questions.

Buddy purchased Californian with 3208 Cats for $150,000. during the previous economic melt down. Cruise only approx. 12-14 knots. Shipped to home in Virgin Islands and never informed me of complaints. Hurricane a few years ago told me story. He was called by one with view of anchorage who said she was 1 of only 3 still floating although he later told me sustained a lot of damage.
