Daily Mail reports that UK Transportation Secretary Grant Shapps has issued a Ministerial Order banning all ships including pleasure craft 'owned, partly owned. leased by, operated by or registered in Russia or by Russians' from entering any UK port. The order has immediate effect. A ship in the process of docking has already had its lines returned and has left. Another report indicated that any such ship currently in UK ports will be given limited time to refuel, reprovision and leave.

I asked a relative of mine in the diplomatic service how this would impact seizures of assets including yachts. I was informed that seizures of assets will be conducted by HM Treasury under its own authority and can occur in any port or indeed anywhere in British territorial waters independent of the order of the Transport Secretary. So a yacht or any ship could be refueling or even under way in the process of leaving and still be seized.

Both France and Monaco announced today they were going to arrest any vessel owned by Russians linked to the regime. Also read and article about some port pilots have refused to board Russian flagged ships. Not sure where it happened

Putin can not survive this... the question is how much damage can he do before his people turn on him.

glad to see the world, except for the chicoms of course, is pretty much United in mounting a serious response.

now the question is... who will take over if he is deposed. Evil you know vs...

Even the chicoms as you call them have been remarkably tepid in their response. They refused to use their Veto both times at the Security Council and abstained. It takes two vetoes to really stop discussions and Russia was counting on Chinese support. Didn't get it. China while naming US and NATO 'expansionism' as the root cause of the dispute (no surprise) deplored the lack of respect for Ukrainian sovereignty and demanded a return to negotiations. Russia wasn't expecting that either. Western diplomats report that Putin's trip to China for the Olympics was really a cover to meet with Xi and get assurances of financial support in the event of sanctions and political support in world forums. Belief is that he got pretty much nothing.

La Datcha is hanging out in Cabo San Lucas. Wonder if the Mexican authorities will seize it and the huge house the owner has on a private beach?

Maersk and UPS have cut off Russia. At least one Texas refinery has refused to process Russian oil. We keep buying oil.

Apparently the Board of the charity has declined Mr. A';s proposition to acquire stewardship of Chelsea FC after discussions with HM Treasury, The Daily Mail reports Mr. A has now placed the club for sale through American investment and acquisition specialists Raine & Co. Asking price is 3 billion. So this ruse will not work for yachts either.

Mexico said they are not going to follow US and EU in sanctions, so I guess they will see quite a few yachts!

With the current value of the Ruble and La Datcha's owner's primary business concern in banking, he may have more reason to fear the immediacy of the repo-man than he does the Mexican government. It's hard to imagine he's still solvent. Yesterday, Forbes did a write-up on his ENORMOUS losses over the last week. I suspect his issues aren't isolated ones. Most of these guys likely have gigantic leveraged holdings in western equity markets and with the direction of the markets these last few weeks, those positions are probably in peril. Margin call is going to be a blood-bath.

and..apparently, Mr A has spent time in the United Arab Emirates in recent weeks with a view to transferring part of his wealth there.

What is Mr A and other (past) rich ruskies paying their daily expenses with today?
Mexico may not follow the sanctions but I'm sure, is not taking Rubles today.

I'm fairly certain this group of "gentlemen" have an assortment of cash on hand for just this type of emergency.
