    Hey just wondering if anybody has any knowledge or reviews of Deutz Tbd 616 V16 diesels. Are they reliable or junk? Haven't ran across many of them.

    I had a lot of experience in the past with Deutz engines, nothing but problems!
    The only guy that was worth a **** to work on them lived in the upper peninsula of Michigan and his mechanics came from Ohio.
    If these are the smaller high horsepower ones I would run, I had a pair on a Viking 72 that never did run well in the year I was on the boat.
    You will have a hell of a time finding parts for them as well as a reliable company to maintain them.
    If you are thinking of buying a boat with them, pay commensurate to having to do a repower.

    These are in a 72 viking. It was supposedly repowered in 2009 with these engines. C32's would have been nice.

    I remember working on Deutz , air cooled, gen-sets during the 80s.
    Serious skid machines that could run anywhere, in any climate. I recall up to 50KW.
    I fell in luv with these small engines.
    Such great precision in their machine work and beauty of operation.
    Sadly, I never worked on any of their products again.

    I am sure these many years later and the complete change in environment, those small engines do not compare.
    I just assumed from then, thought without thinking, they would be a good modern engines these days.
    I'm sorry to hear a bad report.

    The people and shops I worked with then are long gone. But seems to be a few large real Deutz shops around.
    If you like the boat, Get one of these shops to look over the engines. At the same time, you can look over the shop, techs and tour of equipment and service projections.

    Cat C32s are not that great either.
    When you start reaching for big horse power (Cats, Deutz, MTU and others), have that fat check book always near.

    I just looked at a 72 Viking with those engines. One engine was seized as I was told by the mechanic on board. The Capt had said the engine hadn’t been running for over 1.5 months. I wish broker would have told me and I wouldn’t have wasted a flight and hotel room.

    Was the broker there with you? I would for sure thank him for not disclosing this.
    Somewhere I read that Deutz was the oldest diesel mfg.

    Yes, they are the first Diesel engine mfg with Rudolf Diesel on the team! This boat had marinised water cooled engines.

    I used to run that boat, in fact it was my first professional Capt. job.
    Interesting that it still has the same name, as the old owner has a Hatteras by the same name.
    I can't believe it hasn't been repowered? She was a dog 30 years ago!

    The engine room actually looks in pretty good conditions, in those photos.
    Maybe taken 20 years ago... Who knows?

    Sadly, any used car sales puke can list and sell boats also.
    I wish there was some recourse when things are not represented honestly. (1-800-call Guido)
    Even in FL where boat brokers are supposed to be held to a higher level by law, some are still snakes.
    I will remember this brokerage firm.

    Was just looking at their web page. Seems like a big world wide firm.
    Shame they just pissed off some folks.

    I was interested in this boat when i asked about the Deutz v-16 but i appreciate your posts. Hate you wasted time and money. It's a shame all that hasn't been disclosed in the listing. Like you I'll continue my search.
