I'm in the process of buying a 2003 30' Luhrs Open with 2006 Cummins QSB 5.9 385 HP engines. Yesterday on the sea trial i saw that the lower helm throttle cables were very hard to operate. Upper controls work fine but the issue is down below. They moved but it required a little more effort than usually needed. How much of job is it to install new? And being I'm not much of a mechanic what would be a ballpark price to have installed?

Usually, when you move one lever, the matching lever at the other station moves also. Should be the same effort at both locations,,,,
unless, really reaching for it here,, the cables are attached at the throw rod (in the lever controller) at miss-match connection points.
The lower station connected on a longer cable to lever connect hole or pin, creating a different operation ratio..
Yep, pretty thin, but we have seen stranger symptoms.

Maybe just the way you were standing made it feel like it needed more effort.

Any history of the cables getting any service?
19 year old cables could be a bit stiff, but still hard to explain why different effort at the other station.

    Cables are cheap.
    Replacement labor is not.
Get an estimate from a good shop and barter that the cables are bad.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to this site today so I appreciate the quick feedback. I know of no cable service. Doesn't mean it didn't happen but i just cant verify. There definitely is a problem as both the Captain/Broker and the surveyor I hired confirmed. I'm defiantly planning on replacing but I'm just trying to get a ballpark price so I can do a little horse trading along with any other issues that may show up on the survey.

My boat is 10 yrs older but we had a similar issue. Only one motor cable was bad. You say both on the lower helm is tight? Also, I would pull the helm station apart, it could be something there that is getting in the way. A much simple fix there. As long as it's the lower helm, the cables are easier to replace. As far as cost, I do my own work so not sure the true cost. If you are going to replace one, maybe do both. 8hrs of labor, travel, and part cost. With my machinic, that would be about $1,500 for the labor and travel.
